Davis awarded Long Leaf Pine
A husband, father, a leader in the practice of law and ‘Papa’ to five grandchildren received the state’s highest civilian honor on Friday.
Those who know Charles Davis said he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine because he’s the same person whether he’s before the bench in an international court hearing or baby sitting grandchildren.

FYI: reading at the core of program
Life as a freshman at Louisburg High School is changing.
The newcomers are still a bit fearful of the usual suspects — getting a tough time from upper classmen, having a bigger homework load and more academic challenges and just generally trying to fit in — but for the second year these bright-eyed buds are getting prepped for the next four years in an innovative program that has basically been put together by three teachers.

Dissecting the meanings to progress comprehension
In Louisburg High School’s First-Year Impact classes this week, students were studying transition markers.
It was an appropriate topic for the Class of 2011 — the largest freshman class in LHS history — as the students themselves are in a state of transition from familiar middle school steps into the uncharted hallways of high school.
Even more so, this freshman class is engaged in an intense effort by teachers and staff to get them to meet the challenges of learning head on.

LME’s Kim Ferrell named FCS’ Principal of the Year
During her tenure as a teacher at Bunn Elementary School, Kim Ferrell’s principal, Connie Horton, told her that she should consider getting into school administration.
That suggestion has led to one of the biggest honors Ferrell has ever earned — Principal of The Year.

Baby, a little rain must fall ... and it did
A cold front brought lower temperatures and rain to Franklin County through Saturday, recharging some lakes and ponds, but the precipitation is a little too late to help farmers.
“The rainfall has been great, but it doesn’t change a lot for farmers,” said county Cooperative Extension Director Cedric Jones.

Youngsville man killed
Members of a Youngsville church will lay to rest today a man who was a bedrock in the community.
Richard Gus Brown, 74, of Raleigh, was killed Tuesday night as he returned home from Olde Liberty Missionary Baptist Church.

500-year-old ritual — ‘Dia de los Muertos’
Since the visit of the Conquistadors to New Mexico, Spaniards have encountered natives practicing a ritual dedicated to the dead. This ritual, which had been practiced for so long by the indigenous people, was never able to be erased by the Spaniards.
The ritual we are talking about is — you guessed it — “The Day of the Dead,” also known as “Dia de los Muertos” by the Hispanics. This well-known celebration takes place in Mexico, in other Hispanic countries, and in parts of the United States.

Lady Warriors get their Brittany Fix
LOUISBURG - Louisburg High kept getting its Hicks on the court, and the result was another one-sided victory in the Class 1-A State Volleyball Playoffs.
The Lady Warriors, led by Brittany Hicks’ seven blocks and 15 kills, soared to a 25-12, 25-22, 25-8 home conquest over Williamston in Thursday’s third-round matchup at the LHS Gymnasium.

Franklinton will entertain Northwest Halifax at 6 p.m., while Louisburg (versus Northampton West) and Bunn (against Roanoke Rapids) will be in action at 7 p.m.

Mohlmann to resign from LC
LOUISBURG -- After guiding the program for the first three years of its re-existence, Rick Mohlmann has decided to step down as the Louisburg College head football coach.
Mohlmann presented a resignation letter Wednesday to LC Athletic Director Mike Holloman and Executive Vice President and Academic Life Dean Rodney Foth.

Rams celebrate Senior Night
FRANKLINTON -- The Franklinton Red Rams wrapped up at least a share of the Northern Carolina Conference boys soccer title with a home victory Monday against the Bunn Wildcats.
Josh Woodburn potted three goals as FHS celebrated Senior Night with a 5-1 conquest to finish off a season sweep of the Wildcats.

BHS baseball team to host golf tourney
BUNN -- The annual Bunn High School Baseball Team Golf Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 3 at The River Golf Course at Lake Royale.
Action will begin at 9 a.m. Cost is $55 per player or $220 per team. Sponsorships are also available.
