Sunrock withdraws application
Carolina Sunrock’s decision to withdraw its application was met with tempered enthusiasm.
Residents who oppose the quarry between N.C. Highway 39 and Beasley Road consider the withdrawal a victory, but they figure that Sunrock will reapply somewhere down the line.
“We’re thrilled to death, but very cautious,” said Sheila Hanna, who lives near the proposed site. “It’s a short-term victory in everyone’s view.
“We love it, but we’re all pretty clear that more than likely, they will come back knocking on our door (with a proposal).”

Inmates getting grass cut at the airport
Wake County’s Department of Correction inmates were on hand this week to help cut grass and provide other maintenance duties at Franklin County Regional Airport. Under an intense sun, about seven or eight inmates came out on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to trim grass around the airport’s lighting system, as well as the fencing. The crew came out after airport directors heard a proposal from the state Department of Corrections about such assistance during a June meeting. The service did not cost the county any money. School bond allegations added to complaint
Residents who have alleged that county and school governing bodies violated state election laws concerning the $53-million school bond have added more allegations to their complaint.
Amy Strange, a campaign finance compliance specialist with the state Board of Elections, confirmed last week that the office received two amended complaints.

2008 bond projects on track; school board gives OK to move ahead
Figuring out where to place a new classroom building at Louisburg High School and beginning to see how the new Franklinton High School is shaping up, the Board of Education is moving ahead with the 2008 $53-million May bond projects.
Most of the work from the 2004 bond dollars and the roughly $11 million project for the new Long Mill Elementary School off Bert Winston Road are complete.

Crash prompts concerns
A fatal car crash in June has prompted the victims’ family to push for legislative change that would suspend the license of a driver who is charged in the accident prior to court proceedings.
Some are saying the driver charged in that wreck should have not been driving at all and has a history of erratic driving.
The state Highway Patrol charged 21-year-old Louis Mahler Joyner with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle following the June 26 head-on collision U.S. 401 that claimed the lives of James and Mary Holmes.

WakeMed pursues CON for women’s hospital
WakeMed is planning to open a women’s hospital just beyond the Franklin County line, bringing another birthing option closer to residents.
It would be Wake County’s first women’s hospital.
WakeMed intends to file a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the state Division of Health Service Regulation on Aug. 15 to develop 41 beds at WakeMed North Healthplex.

Sunrock opposition committee loses leader
Residents who joined forces to successfully oppose a rock quarry in their neighborhood now plan to continue their fight, but they’ll be without one outspoken voice.
When Carolina Sunrock LLC proposed to locate a rock quarry between N.C. Highway 39 and Beasley Road north of Louisburg, residents formed a loose collective of community leaders.

Local team answers prayers
The Rock Spring Baptist Church (RSBC) and Duke Memorial Baptist Church (DMBC) formed a team that partnered with Score International. Score International organizes short term mission trips for churches, schools and ball teams.
Score Missionaries say that in most of the Third World countries where missionaries and volunteers visit periodically, “people actually pray each week for groups to come in with food.”

Louisburg Boasts Summer Stalwarts
LOUISBURG -- Current and former Louisburg High School performers have been busy this summer competing for the Triangle Thunder baseball programs out of Wake County.

LOUISBURG -- The most prolific running tandem in Louisburg High School history will return for one more go-round this fall.
But the view in front of them will be much different for seniors Greg Small and Hakeem Strickland.
Between them, Small and Strickland have combined for almost 9,000 career rushing yards. But most of those numbers came behind a veteran crew of offensive lineman -- three of whom graduated following last year’s 12-2 heroics.

Manson a jumper for U.S. team
An athlete with Franklin County connections will be representing the United States at the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
Andra Manson, a 24-year-old former star for the University of Texas, qualified for the Games following a runner-up finish in the high jump at the U.S. Olympic Trials, which were held in Eugene, Ore.

LHS releases spike schedule
LOUISBURG -- An early-season trip to the elite Great Eight Tournament in Greensboro will be one of the highlights of the 2008 Louisburg High School volleyball schedule.
LHS qualified for the Great Eight courtesy of a runner-up finish last fall at the Class 1-A State Tournament. The Great Eight features the state champion and runner-up from the previous year.

Mudcats continue amazing SL run
ZEBULON -- Brett Sinkbeil pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season, while Andy Jenkins and Lee Mitchell hit solo homers to lead the Carolina Mudcats to their sixth straight victory 5-2 over the Jacksonville Suns at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night in a Class AA Southern League event.
Sinkbeil (W, 5-8) carried a four-hit shutout into the eighth before leaving with the bases loaded and one out.

H’Djang Ktul passed away in Vietnam on Tuesday, July 29, 2008. She was born in 1922, but her exact birth date is not known. She was the mother of Y-Khiem Ktul and mother-in-law of Kathy Ktul, who have lived in Louisburg for the past eight years. Y-Khiem is originally from Vietnam but fled his home in 1975 and emigrated to the U.S. as a refugee in 1986. He had not seen his mother In over 30 years.
