Republican Party bows out of local pact
An agreement that had kept election sites free of rowdy pollsters for more than two decades is expected to dissolve for the first time in its history on Nov. 4.
The county’s Republican Party announced this week that its candidates would not sign the agreement.
Republican Party Chairman John Edwards said Republican candidates are furious about allegations that a member of the county’s elections’ staff passed out partisan, marked sample ballots inside the early voting area last week.

Local campaigning for Obama intense
The Franklin County Democratic Party Office in downtown Louisburg is operating at full speed, with a concentration of phone calls going out night and day in support of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to Dianna Wheless, who is a deputy field organizer for the “Barack Obama Campaign for Change.” Early voting is being encouraged, with the local campaign goal of early voters at about 50 percent, she said. Obama’s official campaign has been in the county for more than a year, but the office is now taking in volunteers to add to a pool of about 100, Wheless, who is being paid by the campaign, said

84-year-old beaten, robbed at mini-mart
Louisburg police are looking for suspects responsible for two shocking robberies this past week.
Last Sunday, police say a Louisburg man brutally beat a Wake Forest man during an early evening robbery at a gas station on North Main Street.
On Wednesday, police say a man robbed an insurance agency at gunpoint just before noon.
No arrests have been made.

Safe Space annual vigil
Since 1994, 18 people in Franklin County have lost their lives to domestic violence, according to Safe Space.
That’s 18 too many, said Safe Space board member Darrell Perry.
“That’s too many lives,” Perry said, reading a list of the 81 victims of domestic violence who have been murdered in the state this year.

Swanson, Neal agree: no workers
Although the county’s two primary political parties anticipate having poll workers out on Nov. 4, for the first time in 22 years, commission candidates for District 3 have reached a gentlemen’s agreement to refrain from the practice.
Commissioner Robert Lee Swanson sent out a press release late this week, inviting challenger Jeremy Neal to meet him Monday morning and agree not to hand out campaign literature and work the polls.
Neal agreed on Friday.

Franklin County excels at N.C. State Fair
Franklin County youth and livestock producers were well represented at the 2008 N.C State Fair.
Twenty-four area youth exhibited beef heifers, sheep, and meat goats in Raleigh bringing home a championship, many ribbons and over $2,500 in prize money. Franklin County continues to have one of the largest numbers of youth and livestock entries competing during the fair.

LOUISBURG - Why not the Louisburg High School Lady Warriors?
Why not?
That’s the question LHS head coach Erica Wammock asked herself when she took her first glimpse at the brackets for the Class 1-A State Volleyball Playoffs.
Louisburg rolled through the postseason in 2007, thanks in part to a senior-dominated group that didn’t lose a game in the playoffs before being derailed in the state finals by Hendersonville.

Orange’s Onslaught
BUNN -- Orange gave Bunn another dose of the second-round blues during action Tuesday in the Class 2-A State Volleyball Playoffs at the Bunn Dome.
Since their historic run to the state finals on the 1-A level in 1998, the Ladycats have been unable to get past the second round of the postseason.

FHS’ Playoff Pursuit
FRANKLINTON -- His club has officially established itself as one of the area’s top small-school programs.
That much is certainly sure for Coach Deran Coe’s Franklinton High School boys soccer squad.
Now, Coe would like to see the Red Rams take the next step and become a challenger for a deep run into the Class 2-A State Playoffs.

Bunn grid JV club tops FHS
FRANKLINTON -- Montrel Cooke and Quintin Cannady scored two touchdowns apiece as visiting Bunn defeated Franklinton by a 38-0 margin Thursday in a Northern Carolina Conference junior varsity football game on the FHS campus.
With the victory, the Junior Wildcats remained undefeated at 8-0 overall.
Cannady tallied the lone TD of the first period on a 1-yard plunge.

Mudcats release ‘09 sked
ZEBULON -- The Cincinnati Reds major league exhibition game, a traditional 4th of July fireworks blowout, along with 21 Friday or Saturday home contests highlight the Carolina Mudcats’ 2009 Southern League schedule, which was announced Friday.

Howle’s Final Home Game A Success
BUNN -- David Howle’s final regular season home game as Bunn High’s head football coach was won in much the same fashion of so many others during his storied career.
With a punishing ground game, a stingy defense and opportunistic special teams work.
Those factors helped Howle and his Wildcats take a big step toward the Northern Carolina Conference championship with a 36-7 decision over the Franklinton Red Rams in a key showdown Friday at the BHS Football Field.
