Scary skies haunt trick or treat
Saturday was Halloween and all across Franklin County ghosts, goblins and assorted other mythical creatures of the night. . .and fright. . .reigned supreme for a few hours. Greeting youngsters and their parents at the Youngsville Halloween festival (left photo) was a witch that some alleged was distantly related to Margaret Stallings of Youngsville. In contrast to the witch was a little pumpkin, 18-month-old Josh Layton Skiler from Youngsville. In the third photo, Stephen Scott applies his artistic talent to the neck of Pam Cash when she visited downtown Franklinton for that community’s annual Frankenfest. In the last photo, “Queen Bee” Sue Guerrant and beekeeper husband Bill Lord greet children who were out Trick or Treating in Louisburg.

Jobs coming to Louisburg?
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to let residents have a say in whether they use a quarter of a million dollars to bring an Israeli manufacturing company to town.
Already, the state’s One North Carolina Fund has agreed to provide Palziv North America with a $250,000 grant to help the company set up and operate inside of the HON office manufacturing plant — which is ceasing operation at the end of the year.

Off-Road Vehicle
Sheriff’s deputies confirmed on Monday that a vehicle found submerged in a rock quarry was reported stolen the night before.
According to a report by Dep. Doug Murphy, Ernest Zapetis III reported on Sunday night that someone stole his 2005 Cadillac STS from his home on Baron Circle in Youngsville just off U.S. 401.
It was found Monday morning submerged in a rock quarry about 20 miles away.

Martha Shearin dies at 73
For 21 years, Martha Shearin served as the county’s Register of Deeds, helping people record births, marriages, land deals and deaths.
Helping residents with such critical points in their life, friends said, was an appropriate political and personal outlet for Shearin.
She died Monday at the age of 73.

Former FCS superintendent headed to DC
A former Franklin County school system superintendent announced this week that he will be taking his talents to the Nation’s Capital.
Durham Public Schools Superintendent Carl Harris resigned his post, announcing this week that he has accepted a job with the U.S. Department of Education.
Before going to Durham, Harris served as Franklin County’s superintendent from 1999 until the end of 2003.

Early voting numbers low
Although turnout is generally low for municipal races, a steady number of residents turned out to cast ballots for the area’s next mayors, town council members and commissioners.
By 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday, 79 people had cast a ballot in races for the town of Louisburg.
According to Board of Elections Director Amy Southerland, 69 people cast their ballots early through one-stop voting leading up to Tuesday’s general election.

Murray reels in sixth place in tourney
Chuck Murray is still lamenting the one that got away.
However, he’s decided to fish, rather than cut bait after finishing sixth at the 2009 BASS Federation Nation National Championship that ended Oct. 30 in Tavares, Fla.
He was just 2.5 pounds shy of qualifying for the BassMaster Classic, essentially bass fishing’s top draw with a half a million dollar purse.

Wheeler retires after 17 years at VGCC Franklin Campus
Mae W. Wheeler of Franklinton recently retired as the administrative assistant for Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus. Wheeler’s colleagues held a retirement celebration for her on Oct. 23.
Under various titles, Wheeler has been the administrative assistant for the dean of Franklin Campus, Bobbie Jo May, since August 1992. Prior to joining VGCC, Wheeler worked for Franklinton City Schools as a clerical assistant from 1985 through 1992.

A Louisburg man suffered minor injuries after running off the road, hitting a fence and causing a 1998 Buick to slide along its side. Trooper C.M. Garner said Felix Guadalupe Diaz Jr. lost control of the car in a curve during the 2:50 p.m. accident on Sunday on Duke Memorial Road. According to the report, no citation was issued in the accident.

More Halloween photos from Franklin County celebrations
It may have been a dark and dreary night for some on Halloween but many of the creative creatures of the night found the weather almost perfect for a little annual haunting fun. Of course, if indoor activities were more to the liking of some fancily costumed young characters, Youngsville held a carnival at the armory where games were the order of the evening. At that event, Elivia Dale, 7, dressed as a bride, tried her luck at a ball-toss game and found it a prize-winning experience.

Job outlook brighter as company eyes Louisburg
Finally, a little good news on the local economic front where, for months, the news has been uniformly bad.
According to both local and state officials, Franklin County may land a new manufacturing facility that could take over the soon-to-be-vacated Hon plant on NC 56 just west of Louisburg.
The company, which is based in Israel and is to become known locally as Palziv North America, will make thermoplastic cross-linked polyethylene foam.

GOOD MORNING: I guess I can say without fear of contradiction that Fall has fell, fall, fallen or whatever, and the color that adorned the trees just this past week has been replaced by a mass of fallen brown leaves and pine straw, etc., covering everything, not the least of which is the floor inside my garage that I’ll have to eventually get up. 1.) If things ever dry off, and 2.) If I’m unable to cajole someone else into doing it for me.
Don’t get me wrong, however. I’m not fussing on account of the rain (we got about 2 inches), but it has certainly compounded the task of getting the leaves up.

Sleeping through the election process could bring you nightmares later on
I’ll admit it, when the alarm went off Tuesday morning, it would have been a whole lot easier to hit the snooze, roll over, get a few more winks and forget about voting.
But this country is a better place because people better than me didn’t take it easy.
It would have been real easy for women to decide that the struggle for women’s suffrage was too difficult.
It would have been easy to sleep in.
Those on the front line did not and in 1920, women finally won the right to vote throughout the nation.

Who do you trust, North Carolina?
“Who Do You Trust?” was the name of a television game show in the late 1950’s. Who would the average North Carolinian say they trusted today? Recent polls report people don’t trust politicians much, but there is also healthy distrust for many in business, the health field, nonprofits and even religion. Leaders in today’s reality are coming to understand that they must confront and speak truth to potential problems in order to gain and maintain people’s confidence.

LOUISBURG -- Statistics pointed to a possible Louisburg College victory during last Saturday’s home football showdown against Nassau Community College out of New York.
But in this case, the numbers didn’t tell the full story of the game.
Except for one pertinent nugget -- the Hurricanes’ five turnovers.
Mistakes continue to be a problem for LC on its current three-game losing streak, and the trend continued last Saturday as the Hurricanes were topped 30-10 by the Lions at Patterson Field on the Louisburg High School campus.

LHS Starts Quickly -- Again
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg’s penchant for quick starts this season continued during last Friday’s important home football matchup against Northwest Halifax.
With a potential favorable playoff seeding at stake, the Warriors jumped to a 14-point advantage in the first period and went on to defeat the Vikings by a 28-16 margin.
It was the final regular season home game for Louisburg, which will carry an 8-2 overall mark into Friday’s showdown at rival Bunn.

Bunn Takes To Air
WARRENTON -- Bunn took to the air early and flew away to an impressive victory last Friday at Warren County.
BHS sophomore quarterback Montrel Cooke threw for 235 yards -- his second-highest total of the season -- as the Wildcats rolled to a 34-8 decision over the Eagles in a Northern Carolina Conference contest.
Cooke also delivered three touchdown passes to help Bunn improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

‘Cats Take To State
NORTHWOOD -- Bunn’s boys put together a supreme performance at the right time during last Saturday’s Class 2-A Mideast Regional Cross Country Championships at Pittsboro Northwood.
The result meant the Wildcats have earned the prestigious right to compete in the state meet.
Bunn assured itself of that status with a fourth-place regional finish, with the Top Four clubs earning state positions.

Former Bunn High School soccer standout Carrie Jones recently closed out her career at St. Andrew’s College in style as she scored a goal during a 7-0 victory over Coker College out of South Carolina. Jones was recognized at midfield as part of Senior Night, and she received a plaque and flowers from her teammates to commemorate her outstanding four-year career at St. Andrew’s, which is located in Laurinburg. Jones has also been an exceptional student at St. Andrew’s.
