Homeowner kills intruder
A homeowner shot and killed an intruder early Monday in what Sheriff Pat Green said was an act of self-defense.
Law enforcement officers have not filed any charges against Terry McClamb, 38, who investigators said shot and killed Thomas J. Wright just before 7 a.m. on Monday.
Wright was already facing charges of breaking into the Green Hill Road home of McClamb and his sister, Lisa Jane Wright.

War of words: Louisburg vs. Novant
Strong feelings linger in the wake of a decision to keep Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg -- and Franklin County a one-hospital county -- as evidenced by dueling statements from the two parties involved in the dispute.
Novant Health, which now owns Franklin Regional, announced late last week that it is giving up, at least temporarily, on the idea of building a new, second hospital near Youngsville.

A successful Relay for Life
Not even an ailing economy could put a damper on a fund raiser aimed at finding a cure for a deadly disease.
The 2010 Franklin County Relay for Life wrapped on Saturday after more than 50 teams helped raise $144,463 ... and counting.
“With the economy and job situation, I think it was excellent,” said Tonya Clayton, who co-chaired the event with Jennifer Hill.

Civic duty brings voters out for primary
Franklin County voters showed up Tuesday in a slow trickle for the spring primary, but those who did, did so with conviction.

Drowning at Lake Royale
Law enforcement officers said there were no signs of foul play in a drowning on Sunday night.
Emergency responders and divers pulled Randy Terrell Hodge’s body from Lake Royale at about 2:30 a.m. on Monday — a little more than 8 hours after friends said he jumped into the water but did not return to the surface.

Youngsville still supports hospital move
While the proposal to relocate Franklin Regional Medical Center faced fierce opposition in the central and northern part of the county, pockets to the south and west championed the move.
They are hoping Novant Health’s decision to scrap the move is only a setback, and not a loss.
“We’re still on board for a possible move to Youngsville,” said Youngsville Mayor Sam Hardwick.

Louisburg Fire Chief Timmy Smith, left, led a group of firefighters through some training exercises Monday night. In downtown Louisburg, the group practiced fighting fires from significant heights, sending streams of water along incredible arcs to meet their target. The group also went over the best practices to attack a fire that threatens structures that share common walls, such as those in downtown Louisburg. Nash Street in front of Town Hall was closed to accommodate the practice session.

Traffic stop brings drug arrest
Police arrested a Louisburg man during a traffic stop accused of drug possession.
According to a report, Officer Travis Lincoln was patrolling at N. Main Street and W. Noble Street at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday when he stopped a car because its headlights were out.
As he was making the stop, Lincoln said he saw a plastic bag fly from the passenger side window.

Relay for Life
Franklin County’s Relay for Life celebrated its 15th year with a two-day event held last Friday and Saturday at Bunn High School. The event, aimed at raising money to fund research to wipe out cancer, featured 56 teams, all walking laps to raise money and awareness about the disease that can be deadly. Even in a struggling economy, organizers said, Franklin County residents, businesses and civic organizations dug deep to give as much as they could, raising more than $144,000 toward cancer research.

Church members, family and friends gathered, including niece Renate Yarborough Sanders of Newport News, Va., and great-niece Natalia Sanders, a senior at the University of Richmond. Natalia added to the worship service by playing the violin for the meditation hymn and the offering. Refreshments were served after the service.

Hospital: Louisburg stepped up while the county commissioners looked away
GOOD MORNING: We could use some rain around these parts, but hopefully nothing like the 10-12 inches that fell just west of us in Tennessee and Kentucky over the weekend.
NOVANT BACKS DOWN: Good news, at least for people in the central and northeastern portions of Franklin County.
Regardless of the reasons, Novant Health has apparently decided to (temporarily, at least) abandon plans that would have essentially resulted in the relocation of the greater part of Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg to the doorsteps of Wake County, just outside of Youngsville.

Lessons from our founders
In 1710, a group of 695 German and Swiss men, women and children left Europe to start a new colony. More than half of them would die before reaching the site they named New Bern at the union of the Neuse and Trent Rivers in Carolina. Bath, established in 1705, had about fifty residents and it would be 1712 before Edenton was established. New Bern struggled but became the largest town in the colony for many years. That colonial heritage and charm is alive to be seen today.

Welcome the urge to merge
RALEIGH – Gov. Beverly Perdue is pitching an idea that deserves universal approval: rewriting the organizational chart of North Carolina state government to eliminate some of the dozens of separate agencies, boards, and commissions.
Don’t expect reorganization to erase the state’s budget hole. There’s not that much savings available, given that the 2010-11 fiscal deficit looks like it will reach the hundreds of millions of dollars, again. Reorganizing the agencies of state government would yield savings more in the range of tens of millions of dollars a year.

LOUISBURG -- One big inning was all it took to propel the Bunn Ladycats to a victory over rival Louisburg last Friday.
Bunn erupted for six runs in the top of the third frame and went on to defeat the Lady Warriors by an 8-1 margin in a key Northern Carolina Conference fast-pitch softball showdown on the LHS campus.
The rally began with two outs and nobody on. Four hits and three walks later, Bunn had built an insurmountable 7-0 advantage.

Bunn takes a huge step with home win
BUNN -- Whitney Bunn scored with 16 minutes remaining as Bunn High School edged backyard rival Louisburg by a 1-0 score in Northern Carolina Conference girls soccer action Monday evening at the BHS Football Field.
The goal was the 21st of the season for Bunn, who is only a freshman.
With the victory, the Ladycats wrapped up third place in the NCC. BHS is 8-5-1 overall to go with a 3-4 ledger in the league.
