STORM WARNING
Franklin County’s emergency services crew spent much of this week preparing for Hurricane Irene.
They hope she’s a swift guest who’s in and out.
Meteorological forecasts have the storm traveling across the North Carolina Coast, making landfall at about 2 a.m. on Saturday near Cape Hatteras.
Locally, forecasts call for about one to three inches of rain, with sustained winds of about 20 mph.
Gusts could reach as high as 40 mph.

Water Plant still for sale
FRANKLINTON — Town officials took no action following a closed session to discuss their water impasse with Franklin County, but officials said their offer to sell the county water at a lower rate remains on the table.
If no resolution is reached at the staff and elected official level, the courtroom awaits.
“We hope this ends with the best possible solution for everyone,” said Mayor Elic Senter.

VGCC selects interim president
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Angela R. Ballentine, currently the college’s vice president of instruction, to be interim president of the institution.
Her appointment is effective Sept. 1. She will take the reins from Dr. Randy Parker, who is leaving VGCC to become president of Guilford Technical Community College.

Franklin County Schools report uneventful first day
More than 8,300 students returned to the classroom Thursday as classes began at a majority of Franklin County’s schools.
Youngsville operates on a year-round calendar and began its school year back in July.
The system’s Early College High School, which operates under the same calendar as its host institution, Vance-Granville Community College, began on Aug. 9.

Program to remove abandoned mobile homes continues
In more than a year, a Franklin County program to remove unsightly manufactured homes has got the wrecking ball swinging.
Now, the administrator of the program wants to see that ball continue rolling — downhill.
In May of 2010, the county received a $40,000 grant to help with the removal of abandoned manufactured homes.

Business says computer to blame for opening delay
If computer issues can be worked out, the first tenant at Franklin County’s industrial site could begin operations this coming week.
U.S. Growers Direct, a commodities marketing and distribution company, was planning to begin work at its Triangle North Franklin site south of Louisburg on Monday.

Events planned to honor victims of Sept. 11 attack
Next month, it will have been a decade since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In the 10 years since that attack, the country has waged a war on terror, both abroad and at home.
Also, in those 10 years, the sacrifice made by first responders and others who died during the attacks slowly fades into the background.

Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging offers help for family caregivers
HENDERSON — Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments is announcing available assistance to family caregivers living in Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance, and Warren counties. Eligible persons include caregivers of any age providing care for an adult age 60 or older or providing care for a person with Alzheimer’s Disease or related progressive brain disorder.

Retirement reception held for VGCC nursing instructor
Francine Davis of Butner, a nursing instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, recently retired after a distinguished career in health care and education.
Her colleagues held a retirement reception for her on Aug. 19 at the college’s main campus.
Davis joined VGCC in 2000, after many years of working at Duke University Medical Center.

Staggering numbers show hunger is a growing problem
We’ve written about this issue before, but it never ceases to send a cold chill down the backs of caring people when statistics indicate that at least 18.3 percent of Franklin County residents are “food insecure.”
Food insecure is the polite, politically correct way of saying people either don’t always have enough to eat — or they may not know where their next meal is coming from.

No excuse for hunger in North Carolina
Maybe we can’t solve the problems of world peace, curing cancer or global warming, but one problem we can and should overcome is hunger. How big is the problem? North Carolina is ranked 11th among states in children with food insecurity. One out of four children often is not sure where their next meal is coming from.

FRANKLINTON -- After two tough losses to regarded foes to open the season, members of the Franklinton High School boys soccer team found things more to their liking Wednesday afternoon.

SV SWEEPS
HENDERSON -- Louisburg High School’s 2011 volleyball season got off to a slow start Tuesday as the Lady Warriors were defeated in three games by host and backyard rival Southern Vance.
Scores were 25-11, 25-17 and 25-23 in favor of the Lady Runnin’ Raiders.
Southern Vance improved to 3-0 on the season.

BUNN -- Bunn High School baseball standouts Forrest Maynard and Taylor Longson participated in the Blue-Grey Baseball Classic, which was held earlier this month at the Greensboro Grasshoppers Stadium.
Maynard is a senior third baseman, while Longson is a senior pitcher for the Wildcats.
The classic featured two days of games plus a pro-style workout in front of college and professional scouts.

Red Rams Improve to 2-0
FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s decision to play Friday night proved to be a profitable one on the scoreboard.
While some area clubs moved their football contests up to Thursday -- or back to this coming Monday -- the Red Rams opted to take to the field despite the potential for poor weather.
In the end, the rain came at a sporadic and sometimes heavy pace, but Franklinton remained undefeated with a 20-7 victory over the Northern Vance Vikings at the FHS Football Field.
