Ticket punched
A Youngsville officer charged with stealing lottery tickets resigned this week.
Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation arrested Jeremy Montejano on Jan. 12, alleging that he stole lottery tickets and tried to cash them.
Police Chief Daren Kirts placed Montejano on unpaid leave on Jan. 13.

King’s dream of equality lives on
Before Martin Luther King Jr. died, he expressed a “Dream” where his children would be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
From King’s death in 1969 to the world we live in today, there has been much progress and many strides made toward achieving King’s dream, said the Rev. Shane Benjamin, the speaker during Monday’s celebration of King’s life and legacy.

Man pawns mother’s TV reported as stolen
FRANKLINTON — Police arrested a man accused of trying to make a quick buck — off his mother.
On Dec. 14, Charles Layton reported that someone stole a television set from his mother’s Layton Street home.
The report also indicated about $100 in damage to a back door frame.

Unemployment rate rises slightly in county
Franklin County’s unemployment rate remained under double digits, but it was one of 26 counties that continues to see an uptick in the number of those looking for work.
Through August and September, Franklin County’s unemployment rate was at 10 percent before falling to 9.7 percent in October.

Survey tells us nothing new about how Americans feel about Congress
News flash: A record 84 percent of Americans say they disapprove of the way the Congress is doing its job compared with just 13 percent who approve of how things are going, according to a Washington Post/ABC News public opinion poll published Monday.
Okay, okay, technically that may be news. It’s new information, based on a new survey and shows new results.

A Carolinian’s growth agenda
RALEIGH – The president was personally liked. But his policies were failing. After initial signs of improvement, the economy again began to sputter. Job creation was virtually nonexistent. Programs meant to stimulate “aggregate demand” had in reality funded wasteful and politically connected projects. Millions of Americans feared for the future.

Lineup Changes
STANHOPE -- Bunn enjoyed some strong early-season progress on the wrestling mat in December.
But the New Year came, and so did an unusual rash of injuries that have affected the Wildcats.
New coach Randy Kagarise has been trying to deal with the issues, but his lineup has been depleted -- and the Wildcats are currently forfeiting several weight classes while waiting for everyone to get healthy.

FHS set to retire players’ numbers
FRANKLINTON -- Friday night will be a historic one at Franklinton High School as FHS will retire a pair of basketball jerseys as part of a Northern Carolina Conference hoops matchup against the Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets.
Honorees will be Becky Pace, who shined on the girls hardwood in the late 1970s and Dustin Newton, who graduated a few years ago after an amazing career as a four-season starter for the boys squad.

Scoring Drought Ends
LOUISBURG -- When the scoring drought finally broke for the Louisburg Lady Warriors, it did so in a big way -- and the result was a key Northern Carolina Conference basketball conquest.
After going almost the entire first half of last Tuesday’s disappointing loss at Bunn without finding the basket, the Lady Warriors were oin a similar slump last Friday at home versus league foe Corinth Holders.
