DeHart Gardens now part of Louisburg College
Allen de Hart has learned many lessons in the classroom and, as a professor himself, he passed on many lessons, too.
One of the most important things he learned, though, didn’t come in a classroom.
As he stood at a podium before students, family, Louisburg College officials and staff, he looked every bit the professor — giving one more lecture on the importance of giving.

Garden concert
A concert in the garden is planned for Sunday afternoon to commemorate Allen de Hart’s gift of DeHart Botanical Gardens to Louisburg College.
The Community Concert, which is open to the public and free, will feature Sourwood Mountain Band, Knox Family Band, Five Grannys & a Pa and Angela Adkins.

Franklinton to honor a very special man
When Franklinton residents and officials take part in the town’s 26th annual Arbor Day celebration this Saturday, they will plant a tree in a community where George Harris stood strong.
Harris died last March, but not before he spent his life serving the community and making it better.
To honor him, the town’s Tree Committee and Arbor Day participants will plant a tree at the Baptist Training Union on Carver Street — a place that Harris and others made feel like home.

‘Flight of Honor’ helps say thanks to veterans
Army veteran Claude Deats made a career out of making sure critical communications were sent and received.
That still didn’t prepare him for the message he kept hearing over and over on April 18 — “Thank You.”
The Youngsville resident was one of about 125 veterans who left Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Washington, D.C. — marking the final Triangle Flight of Honor trip to the nation’s capitol.

During the 39th International Whistlers Convention, many sounds emanated from Louisburg College’s auditorium.
Of course, there was whistling. And there was applause.

Authorities suspect prostitute had role in robbery
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating allegations that a prostitute set up an armed robbery.
Alfredo Espindola reported that he had met up with a woman that he knew by the name of Samantha or “Sixty Nine” during the early morning hours of April 22.
The woman is a known prostitute, according to the report by Dep. Samuel Zuniga.

New doctors office is a plus for town of Youngsville
YOUNGSVILLE — Residents will have a new option for health care in late spring.
A+ Urgent Care and Sports Medicine will be taking over the practice of Dr. Grant Jenkins, moving to a new location a few doors down in the Shops on Main center on Main Street in the heart of town.
A+ will offer orthopedic care, as well as other urgent care needs and treatment for emergencies.

Recreation advisory board to visit potential park sites
The county’s parks and recreation advisory board plans to take a field trip next month.
Since commissioners rejected the board’s recommendation to use the old Girl Scout site for a new county park, the parks and recreation office has received interest from people representing seven properties that could meet Edgar Owens’ dying request.

More people finding work
Unemployment rates fell in 98 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in March, including Franklin County.
Franklin County went from a rate of 9.8 percent in February to 9 percent in March — the most recent figures available.
Unemployment rates declined in 85 counties, increased in 14 and, remained the same in one when compared to the same month last year.

Gift of gardens no surprise to those who know Allen
GOOD MORNING: In the words of Louisburg College President Mark La Branche, Allen De Hart’s donation of the 91-acre De Hart Botanical Gardens on US 401 east of Louisburg to Louisburg College is “one of, if not the largest, gifts to the college in its more than 200-year history.”
But to those of us who have known and associated with Allen de Hart over the years, the gift comes as no great surprise. That’s what he’s best known for – giving of his time and talent to help others.

Which ‘big signs’ included?

Regarding a recent letter to the editor complaining about the commissioners voting to increase the size of signs from 32 square feet to 100 square feet and putting them up 24 feet from the ground, does this mean for a sign at the business only, or are we talking about having 100 square-foot signs all over the county promoting a business or candidate?

Franklin County’s three high school programs don’t compete in the pole vault, so that event was held earlier this week in Johnston County -- and featured all Corinth Holders participants, with the exception of one youngster from North Johnston.

Warriors split vs. Panthers
LOUISBURG -- The outcome of the Northern Carolina Conference baseball standings could be determined Monday when Bunn travels to Louisburg for a huge, late-season NCC showdown.
The event was originally supposed to be played Friday, but was pushed back three days due to poor field conditions at Warrior Field.

LC’s Bridgers nabs national hill award
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College freshman Traci Bridgers has been selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played April 16-22.
Bridgers, who hails from nearby Princeton, earned back-to-back shutout victories last week against Patrick Henry Community College and the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie.
