2 local women die in separate weekend crashes
Motorists experienced a particularly deadly weekend on Franklin County roads.
First, a Wake Forest woman was killed the morning of Aug. 25 when she pulled into the path of a tractor trailer.
The next day, a Franklinton woman was killed when a motorist turned in front of her.

County’s jobless rate dips from 9.2% to 9%
Franklin County workers in July got jobs at a higher rate than the previous month.
And their prospects were a lot better than the year before where the unemployment rate dropped by more than a point to 9 percent.
Franklin County’s dip in the unemployment rate was shared by a majority of counties as 46 others saw their rates decline for July — the most recent data available.

Lawsuit calls child’s death ‘wrongful’
The administrator of a toddler’s estate has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Dominic Moises Alvarenga Ortiz died on Nov. 22, 2010 when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by a Franklinton woman.
Christoper Watkins filed the lawsuit in Franklin County Civil Superior Court on Aug. 21.

Shooting suspect’s family maintains his innocence
The case against an 18-year-old accused of conspiring with a 15-year-old girl to kill her mother and steal more than $50,000 is moving on with new legal representation.
Shannon Nyamodi appeared in district court on Monday, notifying prosecutors that his family — which maintains his innocence — has retained a new attorney — Mike Klinkosum with the Raleigh firm of Cheshire, Parker Schneider & Bryan.

Former director tabbed as temp EMS leader
Franklin County staff has tabbed a familiar hand to run its Emergency Services office.
Randy Likens announced his resignation, effective Sept. 14.
Staff decided to bring back Angie Callihan to run the office on an interim basis, beginning on Sept. 13.
Callihan retired from the emergency services director’s post in 2004, after heading the office for 14 years.

New swine transport rules require ID, proper permit
Beginning Oct. 1, anyone who transports swine on NC highways for any reason must have proper identification of the animals approved by the state veterinarian.
Any person who fails to obtain identification shall be subject to a civil penalty of up to $5,000 per swine. In addition, anyone who misuses the identification required under General Statutes, Chapter 106 Article 66A shall be subject to a civil penalty of $1,000 for each occurrence.

Franklin County Early College High School held an orientation session for new students and their parents recently at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus.
The event was not only an opportunity to receive information and fill out necessary forms, but also to help students transition from middle school to both high school and college at the same time.

Tensie J. Taylor will be attending the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, beginning this fall, to pursue a Master of Arts in Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs.
Taylor has received a graduate assistantship in the Office for Admissions at the Rossier School of Education at USC.

Irrelevant conventions: Theater trumps reality

Gas prices go up while Facebook stock lays low
I was reading a story recently that said the Republican and Democratic Party’s national conventions will generate millions of dollars for the cities of Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, respectively.
I have to imagine that’s because everyone in attendance must be driving there.
According to a recent report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas prices continue to creep up, crossing the $3.75 a gallon mark across the country.

Scouts hike, raft in mountains
Dear Editor,
Boy Scout troop 520 of Bunn went to the Appalachian Mountains for a four-day hike and three-day white-water rafting excursion. From June 16-22 we hiked and rafted. Our hiking portion was where we carried all of our stuff on our backs (food, clothing, supplies) but mostly water. As a troop we trekked up the mountains, across the ridge and down the gorge, with the occasional blister or two.

HENDERSON -- After giving up 49 points in Week One, the Franklinton High School defense was motivated for a quick reversal of fortune during last Friday’s football matchup at Northern Vance.
FHS achieved its goal by limiting NV to a single touchdown as part of a 14-7 conquest at Viking Stadium.
The Red Rams forced four key Northern Vance turnovers and came up with a clutch goal-line stand late in the game to preserve the victory -- which was the first for Jeremy Buck as FHS’ head coach.

LC soccer team drops first game
WILMINGTON -- The Louisburg College women’s soccer team opened up its 2012 campaign with a 1-0 loss to College of Southern Maryland on Saturday afternoon.
The event was played on a neutral site at Cape Fear Community College.
The Lady Canes played well through the 90-minute contest and even had the better of the scoring chances, but they could not get a ball past the CSM’s netminder, who stopped all five of the Hurricanes’ shots on goal.

LC spikers open with victory
WILKESBORO -- The Louisburg College 2012-13 athletic year officially began last Friday night as the Hurricanes women’s volleyball team won a conference match over Wilkes Community College, 3-0.
The Lady Canes earned the sweep as they defeated the Cougars 25-19, 25-13, 25-10.
As a team, LC made 19 service aces and they compiled 24 kills in their season opener.
