And when he was upset, his grandmother, Debbie Edwards, a teacher at Franklinton High School, felt his pain.
And when Edwards’ art students realized she was emotional, they decided to take action.

OKAY SANTA, WE’RE READY!
On a recent stop at the Pilot Fire Department for a quick breakfast while collecting wish lists and checking to see who has been naughty and who has been nice, Santa Claus found himself with his hands full. These two eager young guys were more than ready to tell Santa what they hope to find under the Christmas tree — and were all smiles while doing it.

Local residents share the grief of a small town in mourning
FRANKLINTON — A motive for a Connecticut school shooting that rocked the nation remains elusive.
However, the reason that communities have come together to pray, cry and light candles is clear — honoring the 26 children and adults who lost their lives in a shooting rampage.
“I don’t have a lot of words,” said the Rev. David Averette, an assistant principal at Franklinton High School, during a Tuesday night vigil on the steps and lawn of the old Franklinton High School.

College house rehab plans a ‘go’
Louisburg College’s plans to renovate a historic house on the edge of its campus got a major boost Tuesday night from the town’s Historic Preservation Commission.
After reviewing the architect’s plans for the house at 601 North Main Street just south of Person Place, the commission unanimously gave the project a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Authorities hunting two men for trying to break into home
Sheriff’s deputies continue to look for suspects accused of trying to break into an occupied home.
Authorities were called to a home on Gayline Drive the afternoon of Dec. 18 after a resident reported two people tried to kick in a door to his home.
According to Capt. E.H. Smith, the resident was able to close the door on the suspects and prevent them from entering the home.

Even if result is ‘different’, 26 people are dead
GOOD MORNING: This time, the White House and a growing number of Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill promise that it will be different, but that won’t bring back the 26 people, 20 of them young children, slaughtered in a school shooting this past Friday in Newtown, Conn.
To me and to others, this one feels different, “according to Jon Vernick, co-director of the John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research. Maybe it’s because we have a president who has been re-elected and is not going to be running again.

Christmas: A time to enjoy and to reflect just a little
It’s almost the eve of Christmas and the nation is reeling from the unthinkable, inconceivable tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut.
And, in Washington, our elected leadership of both political parties seems to be playing “chicken” or some other power-based game with the nation’s financial future and the incomes of millions of America.

Santa arrived a bit early, let’s hope the town notices
Santa Claus came early to the town of Louisburg this week — and probably no one was more pleasantly surprised than I.
I’ll admit that as I headed out of the house on my way to a meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission in Louisburg Tuesday evening, I suffered from severe trepidation.
The meeting was to focus on plans to renovate the A.W. Person house on the edge of the Louisburg College campus and find a way to use it for a student residence.

Here we are just days before Christmas; our government officials argue over whose plan is best, when honestly neither is. America is basically broke and $16 trillion in debt and a horrible act of violence has occurred.
Once upon a time our country was blessed with prosperity and opportunities, but we have lost our way.

INJURY ISSUES
FRANKLINTON -- Before the season began, the injury bug had hit the Franklinton High School boys basketball team in full force.
Rotation performer Brennan Davis suffered a knee injury in soccer this fall, and Demetrius Burk was hurt in the last game of the football campaign.

LHS nabs a split vs. R. Rapids
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- The Louisburg Lady Warriors opened the Northern Carolina Conference portion of their basketball schedule Tuesday with another road victory at Roanoke Rapids.
Vanisha Wilshire (17) and Alkia Johnson (14) combined for 31 points as the Lady Warriors secured at 44-38 decision over the Jackets at the RRHS Gymnasium.

FHS Builds Around Snelling
FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s always-solid girls basketball team is short on experience but tall on potential for the 2012-13 campaign.
Several younger Lady Rams have the chance to develop into effective performers. But until that completely happens, FHS will have to rely on a small core of returnees -- namely junior forward Charity Snelling.

Miller’s quest for a plaque
Understandably, Franklinton’s Jared Miller was proud of the plaque he received after being selected as the 2012 Northern Carolina Conference Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
For Miller, the award was more about a career coronation than excellence in a single season.
Miller, a keeper, had worked hard to improve himself at a position known more for criticism than applause.

Feeling ill For Bunn, LHS
BUNN -- Louisburg and host Bunn didn’t just battle each other during Tuesday’s Northern Carolina Conference wrestling showdown.
Both clubs had several performers who were either unable to perform because of illness -- or were on the mat at less than 100 percent.
