Gun range decision challenged in court
LOUISBURG — Two Youngsville businessmen have petitioned the courts to review and, ultimately, overturn a decision that denied them the ability to open a gun range.
Aaron Byrd and Eric Coombs applied for a special use permit this past fall to build a shooting range on a portion of a 171-acre tract on Dunn Road in the Margaret Community east of Louisburg.

UP, UP AND OVER!
UP, UP AND OVER!
Work has been underway for a few weeks to convert the former Rowe’s Men’s Shop in Shannon Village into a Goodwill Industries facility. Part of the changeover includes building a loading dock facility on the north side of the structure. On Monday, with concrete forms in place, workmen brought in a huge, concrete-pumping apparatus that takes concrete from a mixer truck, shown at the left, and delivers it where it is needed, in this case on the Bickett Boulevard side of the building.

At least the birds brightened winter’s drab look
At least the birds brightened winter’s drab look
GOOD MORNING: While it didn’t look all that bad outside when I got up Saturday morning, it was enough to make me give up any plans I had for going over to Harold “Waterbed” Wood’s for breakfast.
The only activity I observed outside were the birds at the two big bird feeders in front of the house where several large red Cardinals presented a sharp contrast to the sleet and snow that covered everything.

If lottery is bad for poor, isn’t it bad for everyone?
One of those little-noticed political comments in Raleigh recently would be funny if it weren’t so serious.
It all started with State Rep. Paul Stam who suggested that welfare recipients in North Carolina should be banned from buying lottery tickets.
His reasoning was that,  “we’re giving them welfare to help them live and yet by selling them a ticket, we’re taking away their money that is there to provide them the barest of necessities.”
That’s probably true — at least in a general sense.

The writing’s on the wall: Cursive writing is extinct
In school, it was one of the first things I was good at.
It sort of gave me confidence that if I could be good at one thing, then maybe I could achieve other successes.
I like to think I did.
But now, that one good skill is no longer required to be taught in North Carolina schools, so I’ve read.
Cursive handwriting has apparently gone the way of the Dodo.

BACK TO A TIE
BUNN -- Theoretically, every contest in the Northern Carolina Conference is a must-win game if a club hopes to finish at the top of the league boys basketball standings.
Some, however, have a more direct impact on the NCC race than others.
For Bunn, the mission was simple heading into Monday’s home matchup with Corinth Holders.

LOUISBURG -- Not even the frigid weather last Saturday could cool off the on-fire Louisburg College women’s basketball squad.
The recent ice storm did push the starting time back 15 minutes for the game between LC and Cape Fear.
But that only delayed the inevitable as the top-ranked Lady Hurricanes improved to 15-1 overall with a convincing 95-42 decision over the visiting Sea Devils at Taylor Center on the LC campus.

BUNN -- A trap game usually provides a negative connotation for a girls high school basketball team.
The reference comes when a club is coming off a huge win and is expected to easily take its next contest.
Whether it be a hangover from the important victory or overconfidence, many squads over the years have succumbed to the threat of a trap game.

Do you know your ecological address?
It is not the same as your E 911 address, but it does matter.
Your ecological address relates to the watershed in which you live, and if you are reading this, you are alive and your life depends upon clean water. A watershed is the area that drains to a common waterway, such as a stream, river, lake, estuary, or even the ocean, and we all live in one.
