HILMA A. SMITH

KITTRELL- Mrs. Hilma Askew Smith, age 90, a resident of 1956 Walter Grissom Road, Kittrell died Monday, August 22, 2016 at her home. Born May 14, 1926 in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Wellons Askew and Lou Eddie Lowery Askew. She was a retired teacher's assistant, having worked in the Vance County school system. Mrs. Smith was a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church where she was active in their Senior Circle and served as the church historian.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00AM at Plank Chapel by Dr. Carolyn Roy and Rev. Carol Dean. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Evie S. Odom of Raleigh, Marie S. Gilland of Nashville, TN, and Larraine S. Abbott of Kittrell; two sons, William Forrest Smith of Kittrell and Randall S. Smith of High Point; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ruth Dixon of Wake Forest.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sumner Forrest Smith; two brothers, Horace Askew and Elwood Askew; and a sister, Exell Maddox.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00 till 8:30 PM at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home, 1956 Walter Grissom Road, Kittrell.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Ryan Rowland, Randy Rowland, Bruce Newman, Bryan Odom, Matthew Odom, James Smith, Taylor Abbott and Ben Lunsford.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Joe Wilson, Robert Maddox, Brady Maddox and Darrel Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Plank Chapel UMC Cemetery Fund, C/O Darlene Ranes, 2120 S. Lynnbank Road, Kittrell, NC 27544.

Arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home.
