LEON ELMO LAYTON


RALEIGH - Leon E. Layton, 85, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at his home. A service to celebrate his life will be conducted at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19.

Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park with military honors.

He was born to the late Owen and Emma Layton in Cary. He served in the 103d Division, 411th Infantry, Company G, during WW II from 1944-1946.

He was employed by Pilot Mills in Raleigh as an electrician early in his career and worked for Vulcan Materials Company for 20 years from which he retired in 1988.

His parents, a granddaughter, and two brothers, Marvin Layton and Bobby Layton, predeceased him.

Surviving: his wife, Betty Goodman Layton; daughters, Lynda Buchanan (Eddie) of Wilmington, Pam Richardson (Vaden) of Wake Forest, Debbie Clifton (Doug) of Youngsville; son, Michael Layton of Garner; brother, Gilbert Layton (Jessie); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit the family from 6:30-8:30 tonight (Wednesday, March 18) at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh.

Flowers are welcome or donations to his memory can be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church or Duke Home Health and Hospice.
