YOUNGSVILLE —Karen Lana Payne Starkey, 62, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 at her place of residence A memorial service will be conducted  at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at The Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh.

She was born in Marietta, Ohio, the daughter of the late Mary Irene Dobbins and Charles Dennis Payne. She was retired from Variety Wholesalers, Inc. of Henderson.

Surviving: daughters, Dorene (Flann) McLaughlin of Rolesville, Emily (John) Watts of Huntersville; brother, Eric Payne of Raleigh; friend (and ex-husband), H. E. “Butch” Starkey of Apex; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org).
