S. FORREST SMITH


KITTRELL - S. Forrest  “Dub” Smith, 99, a resident of 1956 Walter Grissom Road, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at his home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. at Plank Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carol Dean and Dr. Carolyn Roy.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late William Nathaniel Smith and Evie Mitchell Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II.  He played semi-pro ball in the early 1930’s and  helped and taught many young people about pitching and playing ball.   He was a retired tobacco farmer and a member of Plank Chapel United Methodist Church where he was Cemetery Administrator for 20 years, a member of the Senior Circle, and was a former member of the choir.

Surviving: wife, Hilma Askew Smith of the home; daughters, Evie S. Odom of Raleigh, Marie S. Gilland of Nashville, Tenn., and Larraine S. Abbott of Kittrell; sons, William Forrest Smith of Albuquerque, N.M., and Randall S. Smith of Graham; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Cline S. Johnson, Brooksie S. Pace, and Natalie S. Rogers; and one brother, Thurston Smith.  

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home and immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. At other times they will be at the home at 1956 Walter Grissom Road in the Bobbitt Community.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Plank Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Darlene Ranes, 2120 S. Lynnbank Road, Kittrell, NC 27544.
