WILLIAM F. KELLERHALS


YOUNGSVILLE  - William F. Kellerhals, Sr., 87, of Youngsville, formerly of Port Leyden, NY and Constableville, NY,  died Saturday, May 14, 2011.  He was under the care of his family, Hospice of Wake County, and the staff of Woodland Terrace.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Louisburg, NC on Wednesday, May 18th, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Scott McCue, celebrant.  The family received friends on Tuesday, May 17th from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at Strickland Funeral Home & Crematory, 103 W. Franklin St, Louisburg. Bill was a communicant of Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church.  Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Constableville, NY, at the convenience of the family.

He is survived by his five sons and two daughters, William Jr. and his wife Linda, Harrisville, NY,  Anne Bailey and her husband Paul, Cary,  Philip and his wife Mary, Colorado Springs, CO,  Luke and his wife Jackie, Knightdale, Mark and his wife Janice,  Tallahassee, FL,  Matthew and his wife Cheryl, Bothell, WA, and Jane Kellerhals, Charlotte.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Arthur Beckel, Floral Park, NY, nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his wife Ernestine, brothers Edward, Staten Island, NY, and John, New York, NY, and great-granddaughter Kamryn Bailey, Cary, NC.

Mr. Kellerhals was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1924 and married Ernestine Vilsack on June 8, 1946 in New York City.

He graduated from St. Ann’s high school, NY, NY, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY in 1948 and a Master of Arts degree in guidance and counseling from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in the early 1960s.

Mr. Kellerhals taught social studies and was vice-principal at Constableville Central School, and became principal of Port Leyden Central School in 1962.  In 1968 he became head of Pupil Personnel Services at South Lewis Central Schools, then Assistant District Superintendent for Jefferson-Lewis BOCES, from which he retired in 1979.  He became executive director of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce after retirement.  He served on many church and community boards and committees and was an advocate for children with special needs.  In 1986, he and Ernestine moved to Youngsville, NC where he lived until August of 2008.  Other employment included telegram delivery in New York City for Western Union, Gould Paper Company, Lyons Falls, NY, and village clerk of Constableville, and Port Leyden, NY.

Mr. Kellerhals served in Europe during World War II in the Eighth Army Air Corps, seeing service in England, France and Germany as a radio technician.  He saw the concentration camp at Buchenwald a few days after its liberation and took part in the Battle of the Bulge.
