LOUISBURG - Maggie Lula Fogg, a resident of Louisburg and retired school teacher from the Franklin County School System, died on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, in Bethesda, Maryland.

Lula was the daughter of Frank and Maggie Fogg and was born on December 25, 1909. Lula was a graduate of Henderson Institute, secondary school and Winston-Salem Teacher’s College. Her teaching career spanned over four decades and included educating at Old Cross Roads School, Perry’s High and the Edward Best School. Maggie had a passion for education and a love for all those whom she taught.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Worta McCaskill-Stevens of Bethesda, Maryland; grandson, Saleh Alfred Stevens, Esquire of Philadelphia, PA; family and very special friend Diane Collins of Louisburg. Lula was the last of Frank and Maggie Fogg’s six children: Herman, Osie, Worta, Dewitt Fogg, Sygnora Harris and Willie Fogg preceded her in death. Her marriage to Dennis Moore McCaskill ended in divorce.

At an early age, Lula confessed her faith and joined Walnut Grove Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until her death.

After having lived a joyous and fruitful life, in July of 2002, Lula sustained a fall, resulting in quadriplegia and remained in Bethesda, MD at the home of her daughter. During this time, Lula warmed many hearts and maintained her keen sense of humor, curiosity and savvy. Although handicapped, Lula strived to continue living a quality life until she passed. Her interest in the quality of life of the handicapped resulted in the gift of a highly advanced bed for the skillful care needed for the quadriplegic by the late actor, Christopher Reeves, who was also quadriplegic.

While Lula has gone on, we know that her magnificent smile, generous, (feisty) independent spirit and passion for education will continue to warm and inspire surviving family and friends.
