LILLIE CHANEY FOWLKES NORMAN


MOREHEAD CITY - Lillie Chaney Fowlkes Norman, 91, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City surrounded by family members.  She has been a resident of Carolina House in Morehead City since 2008 and was formerly a resident of Henderson, North Carolina.  She was born on February 6, 1921 in Forsyth County to Barnie Simeon Fowlkes and Versa Etta Chaney Fowlkes.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ellis Norman, and by a son, Jimmy Lynn Norman.  Chaney is survived by one sister, Rubye Fowlkes Hartgrove of Dunn.

A service celebrating Chaney’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Henderson, North Carolina at 11:00 a.m. on January 16, 2013 with Dr. Marion Lark officiating.  Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall immediately after the church service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Sue Kelly Library of First Baptist Church, Post Office Box 75, Henderson, North Carolina 27536.

Chaney was employed for many years as a librarian at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library of Henderson and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Henderson.  She was a member of the Old Bute Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Vance County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Chaney is survived by a daughter, Mary Susan Norman Craver and husband, John Wade Craver, of Morehead City, and by granddaughter, Kathryn Jane Craver Lindsay and husband, Robert Lindsay, of Cullowhee, and granddaughter, Elisabeth Chaney Craver Denmon, and great-granddaughter, Maya Elise Denmon, of Sylva.  She is survived by a son, Larry Ellis Norman and wife, Alice Shearon Norman of Spring Hope and grandson, James Ellis Norman II and wife, Brandi Morgan Norman, and step-grandson, Daniel Morgan, of Raleigh, and grandson, William Blair Norman, also of Raleigh.  She is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Suzanne Mahaney and husband, Mike Mahaney, and children Lauren, Julia and Ella of Atlanta, Georgia, and step-grandson, Anthony Bartholomew and wife, Jamie Bartholomew, and children Ian, Jacob and Sarah of Greenville.

The family wishes to thank all of Chaney’s friends for their prayers and support during her illness and expresses special thanks to the staff of Carolina House of Morehead City for their loving and compassionate care during Chaney’s time there and to the staff of Carteret General Hospital for their excellent care for Chaney during her recent illness.
