LOUISBURG – William Douglas “Doug” May, 80, of Louisburg, passed away February 23, 2013 at Franklin Regional Medical Center.

Doug was born October 18, 1932 to the late Willie Elias and Eleanor Shearin May in Louisburg, NC.

Doug was very outgoing and industrious. In 1964, the Louisburg Jaycees named him “Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year” in recognition of exceptional progress in agriculture and contributions to the community. In the late sixties, he worked as a sales manager with Combined Insurance Company. In 1973, he founded and established May Insurance and Realty Co., Inc., which is still operational and will celebrate 40 years of business this year.

Doug was a lifelong member of Hill King United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Also, he was a former member of the Louisburg Jaycees, Lions Club, and Chamber of Commerce.

After his retirement, Doug enjoyed tending to the cattle on his farm and fishing with his friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Janet Hunt May; his son, Greg May and wife Ellen, and their son, Christopher May; his daughter, Judi May Cooper and husband, Joseph; his brother, Elmo May and wife, Dovie; his sister, Shirley Southall and husband, Wilbur; sister-in-law, Peggy May Perdue and husband, Kenneth; sister-in-law, Eula J. May.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at Strickland Funeral Home, Louisburg. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Dave Bundy and Rhonda Maurer officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank all of Doug’s caregivers for their love and support.
