Ada Lou Perry, 91, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at Marshall Manor Nursing Home in Guntersville, Al. A native and long-time resident of Louisburg, in Franklin County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John Oliver and Jessie Louise Bobbitt Sledge of Bobbitt (near Littleton), N.C. Mrs. Perry was born in the Cedar Rock community and for many years her parents operated a store in the area of Louisburg, then known as Pruitt Town.

A devoted wife and mother, she was married to Wiley Davis Perry of Louisburg. They recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. Mr. Perry was a businessman in Louisburg for many years, including several years as owner and operator of the service station directly across N. Main Street from the post office. She is also survived by a daughter, Peggy Perry Alston (John), and a son, David Arch Perry (Sue); seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Perry was the last survivor of her family unit, having been preceded in death by a brother, John Oliver Sledge, Jr. (Ina), and a sister, Mildred Knott Lassiter (Alton).

She was a graduate of Louisburg College. One of her treasured activities was attending the golden anniversary celebration for the class of 1933, which was held on May 7, 1983. The last check she was able to write was a contribution to Louisburg College.

Mrs. Perry was a retired North Carolina state employee who worked with the Franklin County extension service for 36 years of faithful and dedicated service.

She was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Louisburg. For years a master bridge player, she enjoyed her neighbors, reading, gardening, fishing, keeping up with her grandchildren, and senior center activities.

Faced with failing health, in January of 1996 Mr. and Mrs. Perry moved to Guntersville, Alabama, in order to be near their children and grandchildren. Following major surgery in Sept. 1997, Mrs. Perry had required and received constant care from the staff of Marshall Manor skilled care facility, and from her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Louisburg Rescue Squad. Mr. Perry was a founding member of the Louisburg volunteer fire and rescue organization.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 9, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg, followed by a graveside service in Oakwood Cemetery at 2:00.
