BERNARD L. PATTERSON


RALEIGH - Bernard L. Patterson, M.D., 89, formerly of Louisburg, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 after several years of declining health. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, October 1) at Louisburg United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Louisburg. The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the service.

He was the oldest child of Charles Bernard and Mary Natholie B. Patterson and was born in Roanoke, Va. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke and graduated with a Batchelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Roanoke College in Salem, Va. in 1941. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. In 1946 he was discharged as a Captain.

He attended the Medical College of Virginia, graduating with his M.D. degree in June 1952. He interned at Rex Hospital, Raleigh, from 1952-1953 and practiced family medicine in Louisburg from 1953 until 1989. During that time, he delivered approximately 3,500 babies. Associated with Franklin Memorial Hospital and Franklin Regional Medical Center, he was an active member of the medical staff from 1953 – 1989 and served as president of Franklin County Medical Society several times.

Sunday, Nov. 19, 1989, was proclaimed as “Dr. Pat Day” by the Mayor of Town of Louisburg.

Franklin Regional Medical Center Administrator presented Dr. Patterson with a plaque dedicating the North Wing north of the second floor of the hospital in Dr. Patterson’s name.

Surviving: his wife of more than 25 years, Katherene; his sons, Charles B. Patterson, II (Kris) of Miami, Fla., and Michael Low Patterson of Cary; his daughter, Mary Lynne Patterson Shepherd (Taylor) of Danbury, NC; two stepsons, Preston Massey of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Allen Massey of Nags Head; two brothers, William Steven Patterson from Birmingham, Ala., and Nathaniel B. Patterson (Mickey) of Roanoke, Va.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Travice East Patterson; his sister, Jean Givens and her husband, Richard Givens.
