WILLIAM “BILL” WIGGINS ALSTON JR.


LUMBERTON - Mr. William “Bill” Wiggins Alston, Jr. of Lumberton passed away on the 16th day of February, 2009 at Southeastern Hospice House.

He was the son of William and Lucy Alston, born on Feb. 12, 1923 in Oxford, North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by an older sister, Mrs. Fred Fearing (Florence).

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betsy Cobb Alston of the home; a son, George William Alston of Easton, PA; a daughter, Anna E. Alston Steelman of Yadkinville, NC; a sister, Mrs. Raymond L. Walters of North Augusta, SC; four grandchildren, Ashely and Andrew Steelman, Joshua and Tracey Alston; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Alston.

Bill was a World War II veteran of the European Theater. He was a proud Tarheel who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. Bill worked as an insurance investigator for Equifax until he retired in 1985. His office then became the Pine Crest Country Club where he was a full-time avid golfer.

He had been a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over fifty years and was also actively involved in the Lumberton Kiwanis Club.

His funeral service was held at Trinity Episcopal Church on February 19, 2009 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Roger Kappel officiating. Following the service, Bill was laid to rest at Meadowbrook Cemetery. A reception followed at the church.
