No simple solution to funding our schools
There was a flicker of positive hope in the otherwise dismal meeting of the Franklin County Board of Education Monday night where the topic was the budget — or, more precisely, the budget calamity that’s on the horizon.
Unfortunately, the few hints of positive developments that I saw had nothing to do with finances.
The most positive development was the audience filled with principals, assistant principals, a few teachers and other staff.

RALEIGH – Now that outgoing President Pro Tem Marc Basnight has announced his retirement from the North Carolina Senate, lawmakers ought to make a firm commitment never to allow another politician like Basnight to rise to power.
Just to be clear: I like the man personally and wish him well in his retirement. What I mean is that never again should a single state lawmaker be allowed to exercise the kind of power Basnight enjoyed in Raleigh for nearly 20 years.

The shrinking table of budget options
The latest update about the plans by the new Republican legislative leadership to address the state’s $3.7 billion budget shortfall is that there is no real update, despite more public statements and media appearances by top GOP leaders.
The headline of Thursday’s News & Observer looked promising, “GOP leaders plan ways to cut billions.” Maybe we would finally hear a few specifics about where the cuts would be made.

LOUISBURG -- The match official -- who has refereed plenty of events in his time -- said he had never seen a tie-breaker go so far during a wrestling dual showdown.
So after Franklinton and Louisburg ended their key Northern Carolina Conference match in a 39-39 tie, the ref needed to grab his rule book to analyze the tie-breaking criteria factors needed to determine a winner.

GREENVILLE -- Season tickets are now on sale for the 2011 East Carolina University baseball season on www.ECUPirates.com and at the ECU Athletics Ticket Office.
Season ticket prices for the full 34-game schedule are $175, while family plans are $450 and Young Graduate season tickets are $100. Single-game tickets will go on sale to the public on Feb. 1.
