State volleyball playoffs will begin today
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Each of Franklin County’s high school spike squads will be in action today as part of the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Class 2-A State Volleyball Playoffs.
Bunn, the No. 1 seed out of the Northern Carolina Conference, will be at home against former league foe South Granville.
First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Bunn Dome.

Strong Second Half Propels Wildcats Past FHS
BUNN -- What started out as a defensive standout turned into an offensive explosion in the third quarter for the Bunn Wildcats.
After not scoring a touchdown on offense until the 1:34 mark of the second period, the Wildcats erupted after the break and went on to defeat Franklinton by a 43-20 margin in a duel for second place in the Northern Carolina Conference football standings.

WARRENTON -- Louisburg excelled on both sides of the ball en route to posting a 42-6 road football victory Friday at Warren County in an Northern Carolina Conference event.
The NCC decision was the first of the year for the Warriors, who are now 2-7 to go with a 1-3 league mark. Warren County remained winless at 0-9 and 0-5.

Man arrested for robbing dying man
Investigators arrested a Franklinton man, alleging that he robbed a dying man.
Rodrick Taborn, 27, was charged with larceny from the person and placed in the Franklin County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
Authorities allege that Taborn robbed Jesse Montague moments after he was shot and died on Sept. 20.
Franklinton Police Chief John Green Jr., said Taborn offered a different account of his actions.

A Franklinton man was airlifted to the hospital Monday night after his car flipped over several times, crashed into a house and caught fire.
Jerry Leon Burk, 47, of Noble Road, was listed in stable condition at WakeMed overnight.

Standoff with police results in kidnapping, resisting arrest charges
Authorities arrested a Franklinton man they allege kept officers at bay while he hold his girlfriend and his mother at gunpoint on Sunday night.
Ray Odom was charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count of resisting an officer, landing him in the Franklin County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

Permit issued for quarry expansion
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners approved a special use permit, giving a rock quarry the ability to expand.
Representatives with Martin Marietta Materials Inc. asked to relocate its stone processing plant so it could expand its existing quarry pit into the area now occupied by the stone processing plant.

State Cooperative Extension officials have apparently concluded their second round of interviews in an effort to fill a post that’s been open for a year.
However, it could be well into next year before the state fills the  Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office’s director’s seat  — a post made available when Cedric Jones retired in Oct. 2009.

About a dozen Louisburg area residents upset that the town drastically pruned trees and bushes — and removed some others — at the historic Oakwood Cemetery this summer came away from the town council meeting Monday night with assurances that officials would look into trying to restore some of the plantings.

Harris chosen Wachovia Principal of the Year
William Harris, principal of Louisburg Elementary School, has been selected as the 2011 Wachovia Principal of the Year for Franklin County Schools in a program sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company.
Harris now moves on to compete with other local award recipients from the North Central Region of the state.

County gets good rate on bonds
Franklin County staff sold all $24 million of its school bonds to a New York financial company at 2.88 percent interest on Tuesday.
The sale, county finance officials said, was the result of good bond ratings the county received from three national investing services.

Miracle League walk-a-thon slated for Oct. 23
When folks start walking Saturday morning at Long Mill Elementary School, they will be taking the first steps toward creating a Miracle League facility here in Franklin County.
A two-mile bike, trike, walk-a-thon is slated for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Youngsville area school, the first public fund-raiser the group has had.

Church reports utility scam attempt
Nearly a month after the first reports were made, a northern Franklin County church reported another utility scam attempt.
According to a report by Sgt. A.R. Roberts, John Fogg with Mitchell Baptist Church  said someone called the church at about 2 p.m. on Oct. 17 claiming that the church’s energy bill was past due by $31.80 and needed a credit card payment to avoid shutoff.
