Carolina Mudcats stymied against Suns
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- Lee Mitchell homered and drove in four runs to lead the Jacksonville Suns by the Carolina Mudcats 8-5 at the Baseball Grounds on Thursday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
Mitchell tripled in the first two runs of the game against starter Travis Webb (L, 6-8) in the first inning, then socked a tie-breaking homer with a man on in the fifth as the Mudcats (21-26) fell into last place in the Northern Division.

Modular building to cost double previous projection
The actual cost of a proposed modular building for the Early College High School will be more than double the $490,000 cost of the modular building itself, according to school officials. The Franklin County commissioners said recently they prefer a modular structure over more expensive stick-built construction.

Vollmer resigns from school board
In a move that caught many by surprise Monday night, Mary Vollmer resigned from the Franklin County Board of Education citing “personal reasons.”
Vollmer, who represents the most southern region of Franklin County, has been a school board member about six years.
She said that she is moving to Raleigh and “I don’t feel I can give the students the kind of representation they need.

Woman dies in wreck
A woman living just over the Franklin County line died in a car crash Monday morning.
According to a report by Trooper Eric Hunt, Manda Salter, 56, of 5817 Rocking Chair Drive, was killed when she pulled out of her subdivision onto N.C. 96 into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.
Salter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Franklin County Early College students start new school year
Franklin County Early College High School held an orientation session and open house on Aug. 3 at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus. Students started classes on Aug. 4, marking the beginning of the first full year for the school, which opened in January. The high school is the newest of the four early college programs that VGCC operates in partnership with four local school systems.

It’s certainly not time to break out the bubbly.
In fact, the result was both frustrating and depressing.
After 40 years of waiting and enduring state promises and hints that the improvements to U.S. 401 in Franklin County were just around the corner, the state’s new ranking system appears to be just more of the same.

WASTED MONEY?
Not so, Kelevra. To begin with it was $17,000 - not $25,000 that was spent on that aerial (mapping) flyover of U.S. 401 you referred to in your recent letter to the editor. The remaining $8,000 of the $25,000 the county had contributed for the survey has been returned by the state, and rather than being a waste, it represents yet another step forward in getting the vital highway upgraded.
