Farmers are still eligible for disaster assistance after Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack declared a natural disaster in March, based on losses caused by excessive rain and flooding that occurred from Nov. 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.

Moore chosen as Phillips Ambassador
Twenty-two undergraduates and one graduate student from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been selected as Phillips Ambassadors for 2010 study abroad programs in Asia.
Alan Moore of Franklin County will study in India with the UNC Summer in India program. Moore is a political science major.

On Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m., there will be a Confederate Memorial Service at Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg. This service is open to the public.
The Joseph J. Davis 537, the First Flag 852 Children of the Confederacy Popular Grays SCV 1700, Bowling Green 2622 UDC and the Franklin Rifles 310 SCV will present a program.

In order to qualify, athletes needed to earn a Top Four finish at last weekend’s 2-A Mideast Regionals, which were held at Pinecrest High Schoool.

Warriors win over R. Rapids
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Louisburg High School wrapped up the No. 2 position in the Northern Carolina Conference with a 13-3 road baseball victory last Friday at Roanoke Rapids.
With the victory, LHS closed regular season action at 18-4 overall and 10-2 in the NCC under veteran head coach Al Bolton. Roanoke Rapids could have moved into a tie with the Warriors with a victory.

CHAPEL HILL -- Kareem Martin of Roanoke Rapids  High School and Leah Mackley of Pender High School have been named  winners of the 2010 Athlete of the Year awards by the North Carolina  High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
These are the top athletic awards given by the  NCHSAA to honor the most outstanding male and female high school athletes in the state.

ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats pushed across four first inning runs and picked up their third consecutive win over the Chattanooga Lookouts 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium in a Class AA Southern League baseball contest.
In its first at-bat of the night, Carolina (11-19) picked up four runs the first coming off the bat of Jake Kahaulelio, who homered to left.

LOUISBURG -- For the first time, Louisburg College women’s soccer coach Andy Stokes will look forward to coaching his own recruited players next fall.
Stokes will be entering his second campaign in charge of the LC program, but he took the position last summer and had no time to bring in any newcomers.

Pirates swept at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, MISS. -- Dillon Day’s RBI single to right center scored B.A. Vollmuth in the bottom of the eighth to complete Southern Miss’ come from behind win over East Carolina University, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
With the win, the Golden Eagles extended their current winning streak to 11 games and records their third straight Conference USA series sweep improving to 29-17 overall and 11-7 in league action, while the Pirates suffer their fourth straight defeat and fall to 27-21 and 8-10.

The Murphy House restaurant, a landmark institution, will close this weekend for renovations.
How long it will be closed will all depend on getting new operators.
Alison and Josh Whitley began leasing the restaurant in December.

Voters favor incumbents in primary
Franklin County voters placed their confidence in incumbents during Tuesday’s primary.
Both Sheriff Pat Green and Sen. Doug Berger easily outdistanced challenges for their Democratic Party nomination.
And although Louisburg’s Frank Deatrich lost his bid for the Republican Party’s nomination to take on Democratic Congressmen Bob Etheridge in the fall, he did win in Franklin County.

The Franklin County Board of Education will discuss Monday night how they will fill the seat vacated by John May.
It’s a seat they thought would be decided by Tuesday night’s primary vote, but since May received the most tallies — 440, he is the school board member-elect and could begin service in December if he so chooses.

Faulty switch causes Louisburg power outage
An electrical reclosure switch failed in spectacular fashion Wednesday morning, knocking out electricity to all 1,949 Louisburg customers.
The switch, which carries 23,000 volts, simply exploded about 9 a.m. Wednesday at an electrical substation near the town’s water department.

Award winning artist Senora Lynch, who’s works have been on display at the Smithsonian, doesn’t mind getting down and dirty.
And she usually takes senior citizens and children right down with her.
Lynch teamed up with the Franklin County Arts Council to share her pottery skills with Franklin County seniors and Franklin County elementary school students.
