Conflict of interest policy to be discussed
Conflict of interest policy to be discussed
Franklin County commissioners are again set to discuss a proposed conflict of interest policy designed to, among other things, squash nepotism.
Commissioner Harry Foy presented board members last month with a conflict of interest resolution with two purposes: keeping commissioners from taking personal actions that could have a negative impact on their service to the board, and keeping employees or board members from having direct authority over an immediate family member.

Recovery has nothing to do with luck
Recovery has nothing to do with luck
I have been asked the question: Why has Chile not received as much media attention as Haiti? The reason is simple and makes sense.
Even though Chile’s earthquake was much larger with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, the differences were several: Because of strict building codes, Chile did not have as many casualties; the people and government were better prepared to face a disaster of this magnitude because of the many earthquakes this country has had; the police force and the army are also well organized to take care of their citizens in a disaster as serious as this one.

Building a foundation for a good education brick by brick
Not sure if it’s talk about building a new building on the Franklin County campus of Vance-Granville Community College or watching the basic structure of a new Franklinton High School beginning to take shape, but  something caused me to reflect a little this week.
Nineteen years ago when I first sipped Tar River water — and began to put down roots just as the late Luther Baldwin said happens to a lot of people — the local campus of VGCC was hidden away on Industrial Drive.

Concerning rabies vaccines, Ms. Cox’s dog don’t hunt
To the Editor,
I would like to respond to Ms. Cox’s letter to the editor printed in the Saturday, March 6 edition of The Franklin Times.
The first sentence and subsequent comments make clear that the writer believes that Franklin County is contemplating making rabies shots mandatory.  In fact, NC state law already makes rabies shots mandatory.

Spreading the seeds of revolution
Dear Editor,
“There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Please use in that order.” — Ed Howdershelt
Is there even one person in our country today that cannot feel the chains of government tyranny threatening our very liberty?  As we move forward as a state, we must remember those that came before us, and why they sacrificed so much.
