MARY SPEED CAMERON
RAEFORD - Mrs. Mary Speed Cameron of 904 Magnolia Street in Raeford, NC, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in her home  at the age of 90.

Mrs. Cameron was born in Franklin County on August 22, 1919, to the late Henry and Addie Speed. 

She is survived by one daughter; Joanne C. Reid (and her husband John) of Cary; two grandsons, Jim Reid (and wife Caryn) of Apex, and Jeff Reid of Washington, DC; and one granddaughter, Mary Jo Gallamore (and husband Kent) of Valrico, FL.  In addition, she had three great-granddaughters, Laurel Gallamore, Jessica Reid, and Caitlin Reid.

Mrs. Cameron was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Alexander Cameron, and her daughter, Rosemary Cameron Wray.

Mrs. Cameron was an active and valued member of the community since moving to Raeford in 1944. She served on the boards of the Sandhills Library System and the Raeford/Hoke Museum, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Magna Charta Dames.  She was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church, where she was recognized as a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.  In addition, she held many offices in the Raeford Woman’s Club and was honored as “Woman of the Year” in 1980-81. 

Possessing a keen financial mind, she managed her own investments and served as a corporate officer for Upchurch Milling Company, T.B. Upchurch, Inc and Maxton Farms, Inc.  She was an avid reader and historian, and maintained excellent health throughout most of her life.  Even into her eighties, Mrs. Cameron could be seen walking around town as part of her two-mile daily exercise routine.

Visitation was between the hours of 7:00 and 8:00 PM Sunday at Crumpler Funeral Home, 131 Harris Avenue, Raeford, NC.

Funeral Services were at 11:00 am, Monday,  December 28, 2009 at Raeford United Methodist Church with Reverend Michael Elliott officiating.   Burial was in Raeford Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Raeford-Hoke Museum, the Hoke County Library, or the Raeford United Methodist Church.
