John Gilbert Stallings

Louisburg, NC -- J. Gilbert Stallings, 84, of Louisburg, a retired corporate insurance and reinsurance attorney, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Gil was born on January 16, 1941, to William H. and Mary Egerton Stallings in Franklin County, NC.

In addition to his parents, Gil is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lou Mathis Stallings, his son, John Gilbert Stallings, his brother William Hilliard Stallings, and his sisters, Elizabeth Ray Stallings Clark and Anne Macon Stallings Popajohn.

Gil is survived by his son, William H. Stallings, and his wife Kathy, of Chevy Chase, MD; along with his daughter-in-law Celeste Stallings of Richmond, VA; and his daughter, Leigh Anne Stallings Curnett, of the Republic of Singapore. Gil was a proud grandfather and was loved by his five grandchildren, Anna Page Stallings, Hallie Grace Stallings, William Hilliard Stallings, William Macon Stallings, and Emily Page Stallings.

In 1959, Gil was the first University of North Carolina Alston-Pleasants Scholar and, in 2008, Gil founded the Alston-Pleasants Post-Graduate Scholar Fund, which he continued to serve as a Trustee, to recognize and encourage Alston-Pleasant Scholars to continue their graduate and professional studies.

Gil was a 1963 graduate of the University and, in 1966, of its School of Law. As a UNC undergraduate, he served as President of the Campus YMCA and was a member of the Delta Upsilon social fraternity.

A member of the Bar of North Carolina, the District of Columbia and the United States Supreme Court, Gil began practice in 1966 in Roxboro, NC and, in 1967, served as Person County Criminal Court Judge.

Thereafter, Gil served as staff counsel to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and to the U.S. General Accounting Office and as an officer of insurance and reinsurance companies, including Insurance Company of North America, General Reinsurance Corporation and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, from which he retired in 2003, as Assistant General Counsel.

Gil taught insurance law, on an adjunct basis, at the University of Bridgeport School of Law from 1984 to 1988. In retirement, he served as an ARIAS-US accredited reinsurance disputes arbitrator.

The family received friends and visitors on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lancaster Funeral Services, 804 N. Bickett Blvd., Louisburg, NC. A Celebration of Life was held at 11 a.m. in the Chapel, with burial that followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg.
