Franklin County’s parks and recreation advisory board began the work of trimming the list of potential park sites during a special-called meeting this week.
The Aug. 27 meeting, though, which requires 48-hour public notice, at least, was not publicly advertised.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chair Jan Alford said it was apparently an administrative oversight, not an attempt to deceive.

As Louisburg College begins celebrating its 225th anniversary this month, a long-time supporter of the school has stepped up to help with a major project on the campus.
Local businessman E. Carroll Joyner, the man for whom Louisburg’s Joyner Park is named, has pledged a significant contribution to help with the restoration of the Arthur Person house on the campus.

The county’s Cooperative Extension and United Way are planning their next Local Food Roast and the goal is still the same — fill some bellies with food and help local farmers build a buzz.
Building on a local, and now statewide effort to get customers to buy good food close to home, they are prepared to host their third annual event on Sept. 7 at the Louisburg Farmers Market.

After decades of grumbling, years or planned upgrades, months of testing, and millions spent, emergency communications staff is close to activating a new radio system designed to provide clear signals throughout the county.
Emergency Communications Director Christy Shearin is expected to update commissioners on Tuesday night about how the new $10.7 million system has tested.

YOUNGSVILLE — Commissioners held a planning workshop on Tuesday, hoping to map out the town’s future in an effort that was derailed by management upheaval.
In March 2011, commissioners hosted a public planning session, giving residents a chance to share their vision and provide input on town ordinances, zoning ordinances, the downtown district and economic development.

Come Sept. 7, there will be a number of youngsters earning their keep by serving plates of beef and locally grown produce. However, they’ve earned their stripes by handling chickens and their eggs.
For the last three years, agriculture volunteers have built up the ranks of the Franklin County 4-H Poultry Judging Club, earning two state championships in the past three years in the junior age category.
GOOD MORNING: Wow! Talk about being socked in, that was some fog that enveloped the Louisburg area as I headed to work Thursday morning.
I don’t mind admitting that I was real uncomfortable during the drive in from our home out on Terrell Lane east of town, particularly as I approached the intersection at Terrell Lane and the Ronald Tharrington Road as well as the intersection at N.C. 56 at what is known as Pruitt Town.
It’s Labor Day Weekend, although don’t ask us how we’ve gotten so far into the year so quickly because we’re as perplexed about that as anyone.
But it’s Labor Day on Monday, the schools are back in session, football Fridays are the rule and even Mother Nature is beginning to show signs of changing from summer to fall, even though the frequent rains seem to have slowed that change somewhat.
Learned this week that one of Franklin County’s premier historic sites has gone on the market for perhaps the first time in its nearly 200-year history.
The stately mill that once served Cascine Plantation just south of Louisburg is for sale through Preservation North Carolina, the group that tries to match historic properties with owners who are sympathetic to the sites, buildings and history.

Due to recent rains, it seems that the mosquito population has increased.
These pesky insects can be annoying during outdoor activities. Most mosquitoes are active during twilight hours and at night, but they can be active during the day as well.
Even though we recognize a mosquito and feel the results of their bite, they are not all the same. There are over 60 species of mosquitoes in the state.
Miracle League of Franklin County Executive Director Donna Wade received a citizen of the year award.
More than two years ago, Wade began work to bring Miracle League to the area, giving physically and mentally challenged children the chance to play baseball on an even playing field.
The group has raised money to renovate a ballfield to accommodate players, but, in the meantime, has already hosted a season for players.

BUNN -- Faced with two potential game-changing decisions, Southern Nash coach Brian Foster wasn’t about to be swept away by emotion.
Instead, Foster called on the same play twice -- a toss sweep right -- during the opening portion of the second half of the Firebirds’ road football game Thursday at Bunn.
