Hankins helps Mudcats paste Potomac
ZEBULON -- The Carolina Mudcats received clutch hitting from right fielder Todd Hankins to rally past the Potomac Nationals 6-2 before a crowd of 1,734 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium in a Class A Carolina League baseball game.  
Will Roberts (5-9) got the win for Carolina (30-35, 62-73) by pitching his longest out of the year.

LOUISBURG -- After two weeks of frustration, the Louisburg Warriors put together a strong effort on both sides of the ball during Friday’s non-league football showdown against Northern Vance.
The reward was a 28-19 victory -- LHS’ first of the campaign. Northern Vance dropped to 1-2 and is on a two-game losing streak.

After waiting over one year to play at the facility because of construction delays, Franklinton broke in its sparkling digs last Friday with an old-fashioned defensive performance as part of a 6-0 decision over the Ravenscroft Ravens.

HENDERSON -- After giving up 49 points in Week One, the Franklinton High School defense was motivated for a quick reversal of fortune during last Friday’s football matchup at Northern Vance.
FHS achieved its goal by limiting NV to a single touchdown as part of a 14-7 conquest at Viking Stadium.
The Red Rams forced four key Northern Vance turnovers and came up with a clutch goal-line stand late in the game to preserve the victory -- which was the first for Jeremy Buck as FHS’ head coach.

Former director tabbed as temp EMS leader
Franklin County staff has tabbed a familiar hand to run its Emergency Services office.
Randy Likens announced his resignation, effective Sept. 14.
Staff decided to bring back Angie Callihan to run the office on an interim basis, beginning on Sept. 13.
Callihan retired from the emergency services director’s post in 2004, after heading the office for 14 years.

Motorists experienced a particularly deadly weekend on Franklin County roads.
First, a Wake Forest woman was killed the morning of Aug. 25 when she pulled into the path of a tractor trailer.
The next day, a Franklinton woman was killed when a motorist turned in front of her.

County’s jobless rate dips from 9.2% to 9%
Franklin County workers in July got jobs at a higher rate than the previous month.
And their prospects were a lot better than the year before where the unemployment rate dropped by more than a point to 9 percent.
Franklin County’s dip in the unemployment rate was shared by a majority of counties as 46 others saw their rates decline for July — the most recent data available.

Lawsuit calls child’s death ‘wrongful’
The administrator of a toddler’s estate has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Dominic Moises Alvarenga Ortiz died on Nov. 22, 2010 when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by a Franklinton woman.
Christoper Watkins filed the lawsuit in Franklin County Civil Superior Court on Aug. 21.

Shooting suspect’s family maintains his innocence
The case against an 18-year-old accused of conspiring with a 15-year-old girl to kill her mother and steal more than $50,000 is moving on with new legal representation.
Shannon Nyamodi appeared in district court on Monday, notifying prosecutors that his family — which maintains his innocence — has retained a new attorney — Mike Klinkosum with the Raleigh firm of Cheshire, Parker Schneider & Bryan.

From bugs to buildings: Arts Council is shooting the county
You may have noticed a rise in the number of folks walking around Franklin County with cameras in hand taking pictures of everything from bugs to buildings. All that shutter clicking is because Franklin County Arts Council has a very active photography guild.
The guild meets every first Sunday at Common Grounds Coffee (and Fun) House in Bunn from 2 to 4 p.m.

Steven and Melissa Richardson of Warrenton are proud to announce the birth of their son, Micah A. Richardson, born Aug. 20, 2012 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. He weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces and was 21.5 inches long.
