William Bob Swanson, 73, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Bob was born October 20, 1937 in Louisburg, NC, son of the late William Linwood Swanson and Idalene Lillian Champion Swanson. His brother, Joe S. Swanson, and stepfather, Sid Champion, preceded him in death.

Mr. Swanson proudly served his country, and retired after 30 years as a Major in the U.S. Army. Upon retirement he continued with another 25 years of service with the Federal Government. He moved to Wilmington over 10 years ago and started in the Real Estate business. He was an active member of the Cape Fear Shag Club and within the community.

He is survived by his son, William T. Swanson (Beth) of High Point, NC; daughter, Mary S. Ray (Randy) of Milford, NH; grandson, Nicholas A. Swanson; sister, Judy Lewis of Louisburg, NC; cousin, Brenda Bryson; and a nephew, Chris Peoples (Jodi), and several other cousins.

The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Andrews Market Street Chapel.

A funeral service and burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s name may be made to Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church, 601 Causeway Drive, Wilmington, NC 28428.
