GEORGE W. MURPHY

YOUNGSVILLE --George Wilson Murphy, 99, died Saturday, June 20, 2015 at his residence eight days before his 100th birthday. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, June 22, at Harris Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Haley officiating. Entombment will be held at a later date in the church cemetery.

He was born in Franklin County, the son of the late Cornelia Roberts Murphy and James F. Murphy and was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Murphy Howell.

He was a veteran of the US Army where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a retired tobacco buyer with Thorpe Greenville and a retired tobacco farmer.

Surviving: wife, Emily White Murphy; a daughter, Judy M. Currin (Tom) of Cary; sons, Rick Wilson Murphy (Martha) of Greensboro, and George Wilson Murphy Jr. of New York, NY; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harris Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 2960 Tarboro Road, Youngsville, NC 27596 or to Transitions Life-Care, 250 Hospice Drive, Raleigh, NC 27607.
