CHRISTINE VESTER PRICE
RED OAK - Christine Vester Price died peacefully and comfortably surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, August 17, 2008. She was born on May 23, 1920, in the Macedonia Community near Spring Hope, the daughter of late Ralph Hawkins Vester and Lillian Deans Vester. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Robert Fleming of Louisburg in 1983, her husband and love of her life, Jack W. Price of Red Oak in 1993, and four brothers Willard, Bernice, Woodrow, and Curtis Vester.

Upon graduation from Spring Hope High School where she was an enthusiastic athlete, Christine married and then lived all her adult life in Red Oak until she moved to Sterling House in Rocky Mount in 2004 because of declining health. She was a tireless civic worker generously lending her talents and energies to the youth and other programs at Red Oak Baptist Church, Red Oak School, the Red Oak Community, and various Nash County fund drives.

As a very young adult, she contributed to the WW II effort by sewing tents for the U. S. Military, by supporting her husband in his WW II work with Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in Elizabeth City, and three of her brothers who fought in Europe. She will also be remembered for her steadfast support of Jack’s retirement project of gaining a U. S. Patent in 1991 for his pecan tree.

Christine loved, supported, cared for and enjoyed her family and friends none of whom will forget her special creativity in the areas of clothes construction, interior decorating and her beautiful camellias. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, card playing, traveling, walking club and genealogy. She traced her ancestors back to England and was a member of the Macajah Pettaway DAR Chapter of Rocky Mount.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Diane Price Fleming of Louisburg and Red Oak; a son, Jack W. Price of Little Rock, Arkansas; granddaughters, Susannah Fleming Hughes and husband, Michael of Raleigh, Monica Price Schmid and husband, Mark of Atlanta, Jennifer Price Ryder and husband, Lewis of Atlanta and four great-grandchildren: Emma Price and Michael Robert Hughes of Raleigh, Sarah Price Schmid, Faith Elizabeth and Chad Lewis Ryder of Atlanta. Also surviving are her only sister, Sylvia Vester Flora and husband, Floyd; a brother, Hubert Hawkins Vester and wife Mazel, and a sister-in-law, Lettie M. Vester, all of the Macedonia Community; a sister-in-law, Emma Price Radford of Dortches and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. at the Red Oak Cemetery family plot on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 with Rev. Rucker Burnette and Rev. James Upchurch officiating.

Serving as Pallbearers are Patrick Radford, Hubert Vester, Jr., Alan Vester, Alan Moore, Michael Hughes and Greg Ayers.

Because of her love for flowers, memorial flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Red Oak Baptist Church Youth, P.O. Box 260, Red Oak, NC 27868 or the Robert B. Fleming, Jr., Memorial Meditation Garden, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. P. O. Box 247, Louisburg, NC 27549.

Arrangements by Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
