FRANKLINTON  — Police are using interviews and surveillance footage to piece together a convenience store altercation that sent a man to the hospital.
Proprietors of the Snackers convenience store downtown called police just after 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve when as many as four people got involved in fisticuffs.

Former teacher scheduled to face charges of assaulting student
A former Franklinton High School teacher is slated to appear in court this month on charges of assaulting a student.
The mother of a 17-year-old student took out warrants against AJ Piper on Oct. 11, alleging that Piper grabbed her son and pushed and shoved him against a wall.

2012 should be a rebuilding year for the economy
Welcome to 2012!
Hopefully, it will be a huge improvement over 2011, even though we’ll have Presidential election campaigns to endure for most of the year — and post-voting analysis of them for the final two months or so.
All that brings up a critical point that can be raised now that the Iowa fiasco is over.
Why do any of us pay any attention whatsoever to what is going on in Iowa?

GOOD MORNING and Happy New Year! While I can’t say we rang in the New Year Saturday night, we certainly said goodbye to 2011 in grand fashion.
Daughter Julie and Rodney White, along with grandson Ryan White, hosted a big family get-together at their home on Bethlehem Church Road down in the southern tip of Franklin County Saturday evening that drew quite a bunch of us.

Someone brought it to my attention that Santa Claus had already brought me a lump of coal.
If you don’t remember, I wrote in a Christmas column that I wanted the jolly fat man to bring me fewer closed sessions in this new year.
So, 2012 still has that new car smell — it was only three days old at the time — and the Franklin County Board of Commissioners had already planned to meet in closed session to discuss a personnel matter.

Deputies recover Louisburg police officer’s service belt
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies recovered some of the service gear reported stolen from a Louisburg officer’s home.
According to a report by Dep. W.J. Wiggins, a woman who was keeping an eye on Louisburg Officer Travis Lincoln’s home reported a break-in back in May while he was away.

Paramedics rushed a Louisburg woman to the hospital following a two-vehicle wreck on N.C. 56 near Dogwood Road. According to a report by Officer T.W. Allen, Johnny Hight, 27, was driving east on N.C. 56 when he apparently got distracted by a passing law enforcement vehicle, Allen said. He then ran into the back of a pickup truck driven by Anthony Little of Greenville.

Civil Court case schedule to be determined for new year
Judges and attorneys will use the first week of January to figure out how some long-standing civil cases will go forward in the new year.
Resident Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood will host administrative sessions across the district beginning on Jan. 3, with Franklin County’s session slated to begin the morning of Jan. 4.

County’s teen pregnancy rate drops
Teen pregnancy rates dropped to an historic low across the state, including a precipitous drop in Franklin County.
According to numbers released in December by the State Center for Health Statistics, a division of the State Department of Health and Human Services, fewer than 5 percent of girls across the state ages 15 to 19 got pregnant.
