A new state law should give residents the hunting protections they need.
If not, peace officers should be one phone call away.
On Monday, Strickland Road resident Robert Henderson told the county’s Board of Commissioners that his property continues to be a haven for unwanted hunters who run across his property in search of game.

The Pilot Lions Club has been hosting a Thanksgiving Day breakfast since 1978. Dozens of volunteers prepare the meal, starting as early as 4 a.m. to get ready, having worked well into the night before. The Lions expected to feed about 1,200 people with a meal that consisted of 250 dozen eggs, 22 hams, 40 gallons of orange juice, 35 pounds of grits, about 400 pounds of sausage, 30 cases of soft drinks and plenty of flour for biscuits. PROGRAM SALUTED
The Franklin County Schools Child Nutrition Program, along with Bunn Elementary School, received a USDA Best Practice Award at the North Carolina Annual Child Nutrition Administrators Conference recently. This is the 18th year in which the southeastern office of the USDA has given out the award. The district applied for the “Promoting a Healthy School Environment” piece.  At Bunn Elementary School, the focus is on nutrition and healthy choices.

USDA conservation programs deadlines
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced funding will soon be available for conservation programs in North Carolina. These federal programs, authorized under the 2008 Farm Bill, provide financial and technical assistance to farmers and forestland owners to protect soil, water and other natural resources.

Deputies investigate break-in at Marco’s Mini Mart
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects in some home break-ins.
Deputies responded to a reported break-in the morning of Nov. 18.
According to the report by Dep. Kiel Gunter, sometime between the evening of Nov. 17 and the time the report was taken, suspects broke in through a front door to a home in the 4200 block of West River Road.

FRANKLINTON -- Following a strong finish to the 2010-11 campaign, much was expected this time around for the Franklinton High School girls basketball squad under legendary head coach Lester Wilder.
Last year, Franklinton improved as the season progressed and defeated North Johnston in the semifinals of the Northern Carolina Conference Tournament.

Lady Hurricanes claim three home wins
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College picked up a trio of women’s basketball victories over the past week -- including a pair of decisions as part of LC’s annual Coca-Cola Classic at Holton Gymnasium.
LC is now a solid 7-1 under first-year head coach Brett Vana.
The Lady Hurricanes began their Coca-Cola action last Friday with a tough test against Allegany College from Maryland.

Louisburg announces ‘12 softball schedule
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College will begin its 2012 fast-pitch softball schedule on Feb. 11 with a road matchup in Raleigh against Methodist University.
Following regular season action, LC will participate in the annual Region X Tournament from April 27-29. The event will be hosted by the University of South Carolina-Sumter.

The Franklin County Extension Service coordinated a donation of 53 cases of sweet potatoes to the United Way of Franklin County Fall Food Drive. Above, Extension Agent Martha Mobley, who is a member of the UWFC board of directors, left; Master Gardener Fred Johnson, center; and Master Gardener Endia Hall unloaded the cases last week. The donation came from Thomas Joyner, president of Nash Produce in Nashville. The company is one of the largest sweet potato processors in the country.
