ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Louisburg roared to an early lead but was unable to sustain the momentum during its Northern Carolina Conference boys basketball showdown on Tuesday in Halifax County.
LHS was ahead by as many as nine points in the first period, but the Yellow Jackets, who are the defending NCC regular season champions, would eventually claw back to earn a 71-57 decision.

Man arrested for shooting into two occupied vehicles
A Pilot man is scheduled to appear in district court next month on charges that he shot into two vehicles, including one that contained toddlers.
Steven Brent Abernathy, 27, was arrested on Dec. 16 and charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle and six counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Louisburg moving ahead on annexation, seeking funding for Joyner Park ball field
The Louisburg Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to pick up the pace on a long-pending annexation and to refile a grant application that would finance a new ball field and other improvements at Joyner Park.
The annexation effort began a couple of years ago but lingered on the back burner until Monday when the council voted to move ahead quickly.

For their annual Christmas project this year, Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start committed to collecting food for Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS).  After getting instructions on what food items were needed most, the staff collected over a dozen boxes filled with rice, powdered milk, hot and cold cereals, soups, and canned meats and vegetables.
