Justin and Amanda Varner are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Klaire Varner, born Aug. 22, 2010. She weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long.
Justin is in the U.S. Navy stationed in Iraq. Amanda lives in Laurinburg.
DUCK HUNTING. Little Chase Sutton, 3, of High Point, went duck hunting at the Youngsville Halloween Festival Saturday evening and came up a winner. Enjoying the game as much as the players was Shanae Crudup of Raleigh, who was operating the booth — and who made sure there were lots of winners!
LOTS OF BEGGARS. The streets of Louisburg’s historic district were full of Trick or Treaters Sunday night as the little beggars made their annual rounds in creative — and sometimes scary — costumes. The nearly perfect weather drew nearly record numbers of ghosts, goblins and other creatures of the night.
LOUISBURG – Treva O. Todd, 80, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 1, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Wallace officiating.
SPRING HOPE - Pete Medlin, 70, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 3) at Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell. Burial will follow at Zebulon Town Cemetery.
RALEIGH - Nannie Lue Evans Bullock died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at Christian Faith Baptist Church. Interment followed at Haywood Baptist Church cemetery in Louisburg.
RALEIGH - William Henry Shelton, 66, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 30, at Greater Pentecostal Church, Raleigh, with Minister James Rogers officiating. Interment was in the Hillard family cemetery, Garner.
LOUISBURG - Clifton Perdue, 72, of Louisburg passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
CENTERVILLE - Florence Tharrington Radford, 91, of Centerville, died Sunday, October 31, 2010, at Wake Medical Center. She was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and loved to sew and cook for her family and friends, and when she was younger she loved to strip tobacco. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie G. Radford, and her grandson, Benjamin G. Radford, Jr.
LOUISBURG - Cindy LeAnne Walsh Johnson, 47, of Louisburg died Saturday, October 30, 2010, at her home. A private memorial service will be held.

The mid-term election of 2010 is over — the ballots cast and mostly counted, the debris is being cleaned up and, thankfully, the phones will be free of those irritating and ineffective “robo calls” until the next election rolls around.
But as the victors savor the spoils and the defeated look for new careers, the average American is still looking for answers — and soon!
GOOD MORNING: Or we can hope that it is at any rate. The forecast for today – the day after the off-year elections – calls for a 50 percent chance of rain, and that goes for the weather, too. Thursday looks to be more of the same only moreso.
That said, today’s issue of the Times went to press a bit later than usual Tuesday night in order to bring you some of the early returns in this year’s elections.
I wrote this column before I knew what the official turnout was, so it could turn out that voters turned out at a record low.
However, as I walked through the Franklinton polling site, it was refreshing to see the place packed with voters, eager to cast their ballots.
I don’t expect that turnout for this mid-term election will rival the turnout for the presidential election in 2008, but it will be interesting to compare the numbers to the mid-term election in 2006.

What could be more pleasant than waking up in the morning and hearing all the songbirds singing in the trees? We are fortunate that many of these songbirds make Franklin County their year round home.
There are many who will only be passing through during their annual migrations north or south, but either way, native or migratory birds all need the same thing. That’s where we humans can help.

You may not have heard much about it in this election season amid all the talk of witches and fishing piers and threats of death row inmates moving in next door, but public schools in North Carolina are headed off a cliff very soon and it’s not clear that state officials are planning to do much to stop it.
That’s true despite the state winning a $400 million Race to the Top grant from the federal government.
The second concert of the 2010 fall season at Warren County’s historic Cherry Hill will feature violinist Carol Chung and pianist Tyler Wottrich.
They will present a program of music from Roussel, Janacek and Faure beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7.
Sister Lucy Mae Alston Wright was recently recognized by the Order of the Eastern Star, Leading Light Chapter #507 in Centerville. She is the only remaining charter member in the chapter. The program was held on Sunday, Sept. 24, during the morning worship service at Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church. She joined the chapter in 1950.
Young students at the Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus recently celebrated October as Fire Prevention Month with a week of activities. The month has special meaning for the child care center’s manager, Michelle Patterson, because her father, Ray Patterson, is the assistant fire chief for the Louisburg Fire Department and has also been an instructor for VGCC firefighter training.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for suspects who stole guns, electronics and vehicle titles from a home.
Christy M. Alston reported on Oct. 30 that someone broke into her Rough Lane home while she was out at a Halloween party.
When she returned home, she found her front door and living room window open.
