Murder suspect arrested in Virginia
A Franklinton man accused of a murder that set off a fireball at a nearby gas station is next slated to appear in court on Oct. 4.
Franklinton Police, with the aid of the state Bureau of Investigation and the Virginia State Police, arrested Rashawn L. Arrington in Southampton County Virginia the evening of Sept. 21 — a day after police allege he shot and killed Jesse Montague Jr.

Wynne charged with possession of firearm by felon
A man who killed his nephew in a hunting accident was charged this week with possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to investigators, Timothy J. Wynne and his 18-year-old nephew, Jared Wynne, were on a dove hunting expedition on property in the Rocky Ford community on Sept. 6 when the fatal accident occurred.

Farmer’s Foods collected 765 pounds of food on Thursday in what has become an annual “Feed the Folks that Feed the Hungry” campaign. Residents and customers could donate food to the county’s Care & Share, which provides much needed help and assistance for Franklin County residents, and receive some well-cooked chicken wings from the grocery store for their generosity. Meeting called to discuss Franklinton water issues
FRANKLINTON — Commissioners have scheduled a special-called meeting next week to further discuss water issues, including the chance to pursue stimulus money to fix the town’s ailing dam.
Water service has been a town topic since the first of the year and it’s generated even more interest this month when the town instituted its stiffest water restrictions because its upper reservoir is being depleted.

Franklinton sets aside funds for mobile home cleanup
FRANKLINTON — Town officials decided they would have to pay if they want to help clean up the town.
The board agreed to set aside $2,000, money it would use to pay the tipping fees for residents who agreed to have nuisance mobile homes abated.
“We think it’s the only way to get movement on some of these properties,” said Town Manager Larry Carver.

Fire burns 11.9 acres
A brush fire that burned 11.9 acres between Mt. Olivet Church and Green Hill roads was contained  Wednesday afternoon.
Four fire departments —­ Franklinton, Youngsville, Brassfield and Mitchners Crossroads — the N.C. Forestry Service, Franklin County Emergency Services and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded.

TDA funds concert series
The county’s Tourism Development Authority agreed on Tuesday to support a Louisburg College concert series for the third straight year.
By unanimous decision, the Franklin County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) recommended that county commissioners pull $7,500 from its occupancy tax coffers to support the Louisburg College Allen de Hart Concert Series.

Franklin County Shriners schedule fish fry for Oct. 6
Okay, time to get ready ...
... but don’t start mixing up the cocktail sauce just yet.
The Franklin County Shrine Club has announced that it will hold its 43rd annual Shriner’s Fish Fry on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
It will be from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the corner of NC 561 and North Bickett Boulevard (the old IGA building) where it has been held for several years. Plates will be $7 each this year.
