Allen resigns from General Assembly
Area Democrats have begun vying for the chance to replace Lucy Allen in the General Assembly.
Gov. Bev Perdue offered Allen a position on the North Carolina Utilities Commission last Friday, announcing the appointment this week.
On Thursday, Allen was preparing to write her letter of resignation as the House representative for Franklin, Nash and Halifax counties, effective April 12 — when she will be appointed to the Utilities Commission.

Gunshot victim to face charges of filing false report
A Franklinton man who claims to have been a gunshot victim is now being pursued as a suspect.
Zachary Mitchell Poole reported on March 26 that suspects pulled up in two vehicles and one suspect got out and fired at least seven rounds, one hitting him in the ankle.
Poole, 21, was taken to Franklin Regional Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Barack Obama’s first visit to Afghanistan as president was a surprise to many, including a Bunn native who was roused from her sleep to meet the Commander-In-Chief.
Under incredible secrecy, Obama flew into Afghanistan on Sunday aboard Air Force One, splitting time on his six-hour visit between meeting with Afghan leaders  and rallying support amongst the troops.

Davis agrees to plea deal
A Louisburg man who tried to avoid a prison sentence, or at least lessen the blow in early March, had agreed to a plea by the end of the month.
Under the plea that he agreed to on March 30, Patrick Davis will  spend between 64 months and seven years in jail on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and felony larceny related to a June 2009 home invasion on Allen Lane in Louisburg.

Commissioners meet on Monday night and County Tax Assessor Jimmy Tanner will ask that commissioners hold off on revaluation by another year, from 2011 to 2012.

Lake Royale resident James Sutton, above, escaped injury Thursday morning after his car burst into flames. Sutton said he was heading to work, making his way down the driveway when he smelled smoke coming from the dash. “I jumped out of the car and popped the hood, flames went everywhere,” Sutton said. “That was basically all she wrote.” Sutton said the engine burst into flames, and then the gas tank blew up.

Local students part of 4-H Force of 100
GREENSBORO — Three area students have returned to Franklin County prepared to help their families and friends lead healthier lifestyles, having recently trained with scores of other young people to become part of the 4-H Force of 100.
The students attended a three-day, skills-building workshop in November at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro, where they participated in interactive sessions on nutrition, food safety, physical fitness and proper exercise techniques.

Cooperative Extension receives grant to support the Franklin County Schools Tobacco-free policy
The Franklin County Schools, Franklin County Health Department and Franklin County Cooperative Extension are teaming up to plan, implement and evaluate tobacco prevention educational programs for youth and families. Therefore, the Health Rocks 4-H TRY team of eight high school students from Louisburg High School has been formed.  Their motto is “Stay Tobacco Free!”

Lauren Farmer has attended a comprehensive three-day training program designed to qualify her as a “Certified FeedMaster Specialist” at Southern States Cooperative, Inc. – Louisburg Service, Louisburg, North Carolina.
The rigorous training program is tied to the Southern States’ FeedMaster program and is designed to augment the existing knowledge base of employees involved in advising the co-op’s customers on issues related to feeding various types of animals.

The United Way of Franklin County has opened its application period for the 2010 Community Impact Grants. Awards will total $128,000 this year, according to UWFC Executive Director Kathy Harrelson.

No sooner had the temperature started to warm up and Mother Nature began throwing off the effects of a miserable winter than local politics suddenly exploded into full bloom.
And full bloom may be an understatement!

GOOD MORNING: So that was it! Times publisher Gary Cunard and I have been discussing the eerie quiet that had enveloped the local scene for the last several weeks— usually a sure sign that something is up. I mean you couldn’t so much as scare up a good rumor, much less any real hard news.
Now we know. Rep. Lucy Allen has resigned her seat in the N.C. House of Representatives to accept an appointment to the State Utilities Commission by Gov. Beverly Perdue at a salary of some $100,000 a year.

I am writing this letter concerning my son Terrance Alston’s recent suspension from Louisburg High School. I was notified at work that Terrance was suspended for having prescription medicine without a consent form, wearing black rosary beads, and having five-point stars cut in his hair.
