LOUISBURG -- Hurricane Helene missed Franklin County by a couple of hundred miles.
But, in its aftermath, Franklin County residents and its emergency response community have not missed chance to lend a hand.
The Franklin County sheriff's office established a donation center at its office, collecting and delivering tons of items to those in need -- serving as the central state collection point for the effort, Sheriff Kevin White noted in a Facebook post.

LOUISBURG -- A murder case against a Youngsville businessman accused of killing a mother of two remains pending in Franklin County Superior Court.
Missouri authorities arrested Bradley Morris Hines in June 2021 -- days after Franklin County authorities allege the 48-year-old killed Heather Guild.
According to an application for a search warrant, the 30-year-old was found wrapped in a bed sheet inside a fridge at a Gilcrest Farm Road cabin owned by Hines.

LOUISBURG -- Animal services board members, the department's interim director and animal welfare advocates had a wide-ranging discussion about the county's pet population on Monday.
However, there weren't enough board members in attendance to form a quorum, so no actionable measures were taken.
"We have no quorum, but we can discuss stuff," said Board member Dr. Julie Pomerantz, who assumed chairman duties at the board's August meeting.

LOUISBURG -- The idea of creating a social district in downtown Louisburg was the focus of much of the discussion during the first meeting of the newly formed Louisburg Economic Development Committee Tuesday evening.
The group, which was approved by the Louisburg town council recently, is all volunteer and is to serve as an advisory group to Louisburg town leaders.
The idea was first proposed by council member Dr. Phillip Stover who is a member of the EDC and served as unofficial chair of the first meeting.

LOUISBURG -- KARTS' executive director told county commissioners that he and his staff have moved swiftly in a year's time to bolster the rural ride service system.
And, moving forward, they plan to continue making fiscal and operational changes to make the Kerr Area Transportation Authority [KARTS] more efficient.
"... I've been meeting with each county to let you how KARTS is doing," KARTS Executive Director Randy Cantor told commissioners during their Sept. 16 meeting.

Or, maybe it was a bomb!
Late last week, a small storm in the Gulf of Mexico was named Helene -- and most of us probably paid little attention since it seemed small and a long, long way away.
But little Helene grew up quickly -- to a Category 4 monster -- before smacking into Florida's coast, heading across the panhandle and into South Georgia.

I was always better with words than numbers.
It's why my science and math topped out at chemistry and physics.
And, it's why my hands are stained with ink and not lab chemicals or dry erase markers.
But, while I've never thought wistfully about solving for "X," I do always wonder about why.

Dear editor: Should the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) decide which hospital to take a person to?
My God No! It makes no difference how close the hospital is. The person has to pay them and not all hospitals are in the person's insurance company network.
The person has to pay more money for out-of-insurance company network services.

Dear editor, In the Sept. 19 edition of The Franklin Times (Letters to the editor) a writer described Donald Trump as "a self-serving demagogue who promises to trash our 250-year-old Constitution and establish himself American dictator for life- no elections needed"
After reading this dribble, I felt compelled to respond. Such a description is not only false and misleading but is completely devoid of facts.

FRANKLINTON, NC--Bennie Junior Long, 63, died September 28, 2024 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Bennie was born on April 3, 1961 to the late Wilbert and Lucy Smith Long. In addition to his parents, Bennie was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Stallings.

FRANKLINTON, NC--Charles Kenneth Parent, Sr., 71, died September 27, 2024 at his home in Franklinton. Charles was born on January 10, 1953 in Easton, PA to the late Anthony and Viola Sullivan Parent.

LOUISBURG, NC--Mrs. Shirley G. Marshall, 89 of Louisburg, passed away peacefully shortly after midnight on Friday, September 20, 2024. She was born on September 6, 1935 in Granville County, N.C. to the late Mortiamon Robert and Nora Turner Garner.

The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that breast cancer is the second most common cancer across the globe, and the number one cancer in women. Nearly three million new cases of breast cancer in women are diagnosed across the globe each year.
Breast cancer poses a notable threat to women's health, but research and resulting advancements in treatment have made the disease more treatable than ever.

The term "breast cancer" does not describe a single type of cancer, but rather several forms of a disease that can develop in areas of the breast. The American Cancer Society says breast cancer type is determined by the specific cells in the breast that become cancerous. There are many different types of breast cancer, and the medical community's understanding of the disease is based on decades of research and millions of patients treated.

Breast cancer affects millions of individuals each year. The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe, affecting roughly 2.3 million women each year.
Despite the global prevalence of breast cancer, various organizations report high five-year survival rates, particularly among women whose cancers are detected in the earliest stages of the disease.

Franklin Granville Vance Smart Start will offer Mini-grant and scholarship opportunities for child care centers and their employees. These opportunities are possible because of the generous support of Time-Out-Tuesday and Ducky Derby fundraisers. This support comes at a time when child care centers face multiple challenges with staffing and funding.
