Two dead, one wounded in pre-holiday shootings

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg police continue to look for suspects in two shooting incidents -- one that proved fatal.
And, it was the second fatal shooting within a week's time.
"Thanksgiving," Louisburg Police Chief Jason Abbott said in a Nov. 27 Facebook post, "should be a time when we celebrate the things in life that we are most grateful for.

Bunn EMS station, radio tower receive county's okay

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County commissioners took two separate actions to bolster public safety.
First, they authorized county management to award a construction bid for a new Bunn EMS station.
And, they agreed to move forward with actions to speed up an if-necessary radio tower along one of the county's main thoroughfares.
In June, commissioners agreed to pay the May family just over $200,000 for a two-acre site to build a new EMS station to serve Bunn along N.C. 39, next to Bunn Middle School.

Can town zoning stymie county plans?

LOUISBURG -- As Louisburg Town Council members discussed its new zoning ordinance, officials landed on two hot-button topics -- the county's administrative expansion plans and the impacts of its planned judicial complex.
In November 2022, Franklin County agreed to pay $1.4 million for nearly 40 acres along U.S. 401, just south of Louisburg Plaza where Walmart is located.

With humor, humility and joy, vet firefighter tells it like it is

There are a couple of things that are a given when you hang around firefighters: You're going to eat some good food. And, you're going to hear some good stories.
Both were true on Tuesday night when I had the privilege of attending the annual Franklin County Firefighters Association banquet where they remembered fallen firefighters, celebrated those with long-time service and named their Firefighter of the Year.
Because of timing and space, that story and photos will appear in an upcoming edition of The Franklin Times.

Honoring 'citizenship in action'

Dear editor: The front page of the Nov. 21 edition of The Franklin Times featured a lovely picture of Emma Stewart receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award from Louisburg Mayor Chris Neal.
It's not hard to think of good things to say about Emma, it's hard to winnow them down! She has contributed to this community of Louisburg, Franklin County and the state of North Carolina in so many ways -- and none halfway!

'Ignorance' no excuse!

Dear editor: Ignorance of the law doesn't excuse one from a crime or from doing the time.
Ignorance of politics doesn't relieve one from the taint of voting for the scoundrel rather than the saint.
