School board organizes; partisanship reappears
School board organizes; partisanship reappears

LOUISBURG -- If anyone was still under the impression that the Franklin County Board of Education is politically nonpartisan, that impression quickly evaporated at Monday night's meeting.
The first indication was a large contingent of the local Republican Party which showed up to witness the swearing in of two new board members, a contingent that included newly elected GOP County Commissioners Logan Davis and Stuart May, Commissioner Michael Schriver and the party's county chair, Ed Strickland.

ONE POPULAR GUY!
ONE POPULAR GUY!

Santa Claus has been one very busy and very popular guy around Franklin County in recent days as evidenced by this greeting he received from children during the Bunn Christmas parade last Sunday afternoon. Santa also made appearances in parades in Youngsville, Franklinton and Louisburg -- and it's a fairly safe bet he'll be a star attraction in Alert's parade this Saturday.

Louisburg delays action on county justice center

LOUISBURG -- The town of Louisburg gave Franklin County about half of what it has requested for the proposed Criminal Justice building downtown, but postponed action on the second half of the county's request until at least February.
To move forward with the huge, three-story building downtown, the county needed two concessions from the town:
First, was a zoning change from downtown commercial (B-1) to a Planned Development District (PDD). That request was granted.

Firefighters honored for service far beyond call of duty

LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Firefighters Association celebrated legacies, longevity and legends, while remembering the fallen during their annual banquet this month.
They recognized firefighters who have put in 30, 40 and 50 years of service, remembered those who have died in the line of duty, and recognized their Firefighter of the Year, Allen Nelms -- a man continuing the legacy his father, Henry, helped start in Centerville 65 years ago.

Do you think Santa could bring us a water solution?
Do you think Santa could bring us a water solution?

Two weeks and a couple of days ... until ... Santa and his reindeer make their annual rounds.
Hope you're ready -- because I'm not and have no realistic idea how to get ready in time.
Hoping for a Christmas miracle or at least a gift list that doesn't break the bank.
The season has begun in earnest in recent days and if you don't believe that, just ask my editorial page cohort Carey Johnson.

Are social media reactions to murder killing our humanity?
Are social media reactions to murder killing our humanity?

I know people are upset about the state of health care.
Actually, I'm pretty sure people are mad 'af' when it comes to the state of health care, its limitations and, in many instances, its blatant exploitation of those who rely upon it.
But, I'm going to ask a question for which I fear I already know the answer: Are we okay with murder?!?

Will FEMA be ready to meet any future challenge here in NC?

Dear editor: After the current Vice President lost the election, she traveled to Hawaii to rest and recuperate. I guess the rigors of running a Presidential campaign are exhausting. Expensive also! For all the Americans that experienced devastation from Hurricane Helene, I doubt if any of these folks can travel to recuperate. There are still people living in tents in Western North Carolina. The last couple of weeks have seen below freezing temperatures in that area.
