One of the most talented players in Louisburg College men’s soccer history is now competing professionally. Armando Romero, a 2004 LC grad who went on to finish his college career at Radford University, debuted last Saturday for the Charleston Battery of the first-level United Soccer League.

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Louisburg College will enter next week’s Region X Baseball Tournament as the No. 4 seed after taking three of four games last weekend in LC’s regular season league finale at Florence-Darlington Tech at Legion Park.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Kyle Robertson and the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops baseball team will begin Division III regional action May 18 at a site to be determined. The regional winner will then advance to the national tournament.

LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Mr. Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Grant, Jr., 57, who died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, were conducted Tuesday, May 2, at Ivory Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Shelton Daniels officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

RALEIGH - Blanche Carlyle Pace Freeman, 86, died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Rex Healthcare. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 30, at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Burial was in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Zebulon.

CLAYTON - Carol Worlds Pendergrass, 61, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 30, at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, with Dr. John Allen officiating. Interment followed at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.

SPRING HOPE - Geraldine M. Edwards, 76, died Sunday, April 30, 2006. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 2, at Ephesus Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Wakefield officiating. Entombment will be at a later date at Peachtree Baptist Church cemetery.

LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Mr. Wilbert Epps, 87, who died Sunday, April 30, 2006, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at Allen Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. C. L. Dunston officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

KITTRELL - Funeral services for Mr. Lorenzo Cooper, 20, who died Sunday, April 30, 2006, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Concord Baptist Church, with the Rev. Samuel Blalock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Vance-Granville Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 101 students into the international honorary society of two-year colleges on April 18. This was the largest group ever inducted since the Alpha Sigma Chi chapter began at Vance-Granville.

The third annual Fox Hunters Relay For Life Red Bud Church Hunt was Saturday, April 22, at Tri County Fox Preserve in Castalia, owned by John Stevenson.

Former Lt. Deputy Pat Green bested his former boss in a three-way primary race for the Democratic nomination for sheriff, while Bunn Police Chief Kent Winstead won the Republican sheriff’s nomination.
Garnering 48 percent of the vote, Green collected 2,677 votes to 1,421 votes for fellow challenger and former Lt. Joe Lynch.
Incumbent Sheriff Jerry Jones received 1,439 votes.

Residents voted down a $45-million bond on Tuesday, leaving school and county officials with the challenge of finding how to deal with growth and aging facilities.
Unofficially, the vote was 3,770 no votes to 3,500 yes votes. The tally becomes official during a later canvass.
The bond would have included money for a new high school in the Franklinton and Youngsville area, and other school improvements.
