‘Canes Explode For Sweep
LOUISBURG -- The hits just keep coming for the Louisburg College baseball squad -- on and off the field.
Before the campaign, LC was ranked 38th in the country by the Perfect Game diamond website.
The number, however, has grown along with the Hurricanes’ undefeated winning streak.
And thanks in part to a four-game home sweep last weekend against Anne Arundel Community College from Maryland, the Hurricanes have shot all the way up to a No. 5 national ranking.

LC wins fast-pitch contests
ALBEMARLE -- Louisburg College’s softball squad improved to 3-1 on the campaign with a key doubleheader sweep Sunday on the road against Stanly Community College.
Scores were 5-2 in the first game and 7-6 in the nightcap in Louisburg College’s favor.
Sophomore veteran Jamie Hockaday went the distance in the opener for LC, allowing just two runs, four hits and zero walks while striking out four.

Lady Hurricanes near region title
LOUISBURG -- Maybe it’s a formality, but Louisburg College still has a bit of business to take care of in the Region X women’s basketball standings.
The Lady Hurricanes are currently undefeated in the league and have yet to be threatened -- but they needed a home victory Tuesday against Wake Tech Community College in order to clinch the championship.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College’s softball program made plenty of strides under former head coach Monica Gordy.
It’s now up to Don Stopa to take that next step toward a possible Region X Championship.
For all of Gordy’s successes during her stint at Louisburg, taking a region title proved to be an elusive proposition, thanks in part to the recent league dominance of backyard rival Pitt Community College.

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers visited Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg on Thursday. Her visit was not announced in advance. This was Ellmers’ first visit to the facility and it included a presentation, question-and-answer session, and tour. Much of the discussion was focused on Franklin Regional’s community impact, including $4.4 million of free care given in 2010, as well as $6.5 million in unreimbursed Medicare costs.

Alleged child pornographer’s case headed to grand jury
The case against a Louisburg man accused of child pornography is expected to go before a grand jury this coming week.
Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation arrested Bruce Arthur Howard on Oct. 27,  charging him with 10 counts of second-degree child sexual exploitation and one count of first-degree child sexual exploitation.

Historic Holton Gymnasium on the Louisburg College campus will be renamed the Roger G. Taylor Athletic Center in a ceremony planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. Taylor is a 1968 graduate of Louisburg College and was a member of the basketball team.

Suspects in murder to appear in court
Two more suspects in a 2010 murder are slated to appear in court this coming week.
And so is a former Bunn police officer accused of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
Sheriff’s deputies allege more than a handful of assailants broke into Anthony Perry’s home in northern Franklin County in March 2010, killing him during a robbery attempt.

FRANKLINTON — With a unanimous vote, town officials took ownership of a town cemetery that for years served as a racial dividing line for the community.
In April 2010, commissioners agreed to assume maintenance of Evergreen Cemetery — historically the final resting place for minorities in town.
