County commissioners will be asked on Monday to purchase land for a park to fulfill a Louisburg man’s dying wish.
Edgar Owens died in January 2010, leaving behind an estate that included $800,000 for the county to buy land for a park, develop a pond and maintain the property.

Troopers investigate Hwy 56 collision
A Franklinton woman was killed Friday afternoon in a head-on collision.
Franklinton police confirmed that Joyce Roberts died in the wreck on N.C. 56 at about 1 p.m.
Roberts’ nephew is on the town’s fire department and also serves on Granville County’s EMS, officials said.
“She always helped out in the community,” said Police Chief John Green. “She was one of the first people that helped support National Night Out.”

Operation Stop Arm
In an effort to promote traffic safety around North Carolina schools, school buses and school bus stops, the Highway Patrol will conduct “Operation Stop Arm” the week of Oct. 17-21. The operation will be conducted from 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, through Friday, Oct. 21. A press event will be held in Raleigh at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds on Monday, Oct. 17, announcing the operation.

A Blessing Inc. in Franklin County has been selected by NC Beautiful to receive a special beautification prize of 54 azaleas for use in the group’s 2011 Beautification projects. If you do, it would be of great interest to officials with the Granville County Library System. They are looking to fill a gap in the library’s collection of Granville County newspapers.
Specifically, they hope to turn up issues of the Oxford Public Ledger published between 1947 and 1967.

FRMC hosting Ladies Night Out on Oct. 25
Franklin Regional Medical Center will host its annual Ladies Night Out event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the hospital’s outpatient waiting area. This is a free event, and all members of the community are invited to attend.
“Ladies Night Out is a staple event for the women in Franklin County, and we are excited to be hosting it again,” said Jason Proctor, president of Franklin Regional.

PFC Rashaun Pace-Evans recently graduated from Army Basic Training. He is now attending AIT at Fort Gordon, studying to become a B25 Information Technology Specialist.
He is a 2011 graduate of Louisburg High School and is the son of Robert Evans and Damita Pace-Evans of Louisburg.

Spivey named asst. principal
Larranda Spivey, Bunn High School Alumni, has been named assistant principal at Southern Nash High School in Nash County.
Spivey graduated from Bunn High School in 2000.
She went on to receive an undergraduate degree in Psychology, with a minor in Criminal Justice at NC Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount.

RIGHT ON SCHEDULE
The new Louisburg McDonald’s Restaurant opened right on schedule Thursday morning, roughly 110 days after the old restaurant closed. The former building was demolished, the site altered and raised and a new building with twin drive-throughs is now serving patrons. The new restaurant, on Bickett Boulevard, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to owner Steve Fordham.

Louisburg police arrest two Louisburg College students
Franklinton police arrested a man they allege was operating a drug house.
Dating back to Aug., 23, Det. Reggie Norflett said a number of residents in the area of 202 Mitchell Avenue had expressed concern about illegal activity occurring at the property.
After monitoring the house and relying on witnesses and a confidential informant, officers were able to execute a search warrant on Oct. 11, arresting James Robert “Bull” Bullock, 53.

NCWC earns ranking
ROCKY MOUNT -- The men’s basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan College has earned a preseason top-25 national ranking by DIII News, the monthly newsletter of Division III men’s basketball.  
The Battling Bishops came in at #25 and were listed as the top team in the USA South Athletic Conference.  
Head Coach John Thompson, who is entering his 17th season at the helm of the program, had this to say regarding his squad’s early recognition.
