Good role models are important, but especially so in single parent homes. A group of male students at Shaw University in Raleigh are giving new meaning to the term gentlemen while reinforcing that importance.
Each Wednesday about 20 Shaw University “Gentlemen of Distinction” show up at Raleigh’s Ligon Middle School, dressed in coats and ties to mentor a group of specially selected young boys, many of whom come from single parent, economically depressed homes.
YOUNGSVILLE - Martha Allene Ketring, 76, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 8, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
FRANKLINTON - Betty Fay Ray, 69, died Sunday March 6, 2011 at her residence. A memorial service will be held at her residence (252 Gordon Moore Rd. Franklinton) at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, with the Rev. Carl Hunter officiating.
LOUISBURG - Deborah Kay Babb, 61, died Sunday March 6, 2011, at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 8, at Elmwood Cemetery with Dr. William Wakefield officiating.
ROCKY MOUNT— Edith Eloise Modlin Davis, 95, died Sunday, March 6, 2011. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight (Wednesday, March 9) at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home.
WAKE FOREST- William Lee “Butch” Murphy, 58, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at Unity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Woodlief officiating.
ZEBULON – William Carol “W. C.” Jeans, 70, died Friday, March 4, 2011. Funeral service was held Monday, March 7, at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel. Internment followed in the Old Bunn Cemetery on Hwy. 98.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Arthur “Junior” Williams, 75, who died Friday, March 4, 2011, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Emanuel Church of God, with the Rev. C. E. Willie III officiating. Burial will follow in the M. H. Jones cemetery.
FRANKLINTON - Funeral services for George Harris Jr., 73, who died Friday, March 4, 2011, will be held Saturday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at Franklinton Elementary School Gymnasium, with the Rev. Calvin Jones officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
WARRENTON - Funeral services for Lucille S. Richardson, 89, who died Thursday, March 3, 2011, were held Monday, March 7, at Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Mt. Bethel Church cemetery.
GARNER - Cleotha Hayes, 74, died Friday, March 4, 2011. A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 8, at Poplar Springs Christian Church, Raleigh. Burial was in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Raleigh.
FRANKLINTON- Elizabeth Nicole Edwards, 21, died Monday, March 7, 2011 at Duke Medical Center in Durham from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 10, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Perry’s Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Lucy J. Carter, 66, who died Sunday, March 6, 2011, will be Saturday, March 12, at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Church cemetery.

WENTWORTH -- Even though his team leads the nation in margin of victory, first-year Louisburg College head coach Mark Vanderslice is quick to point out that his Hurricanes have experienced their share of tight games.
Louisburg, however, has made a habit of turning nail-biters into blowouts in the bat of an eye -- and Sunday’s championship outing of the Region X Men’s Basketball Tournament would continue that trend.
WENTWORTH -- While Louisburg College was winning its second straight Region X Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship, one of its most important contributors was less than one hour away, helping a potential recruit try to get his car fixed on the side of the road.
In the rain, no less.

KINSTON -- Overcoming the Patrick Henry nemesis has been a two-year quest for Louisburg College veteran women’s basketball coach Mike Holloman.
But it still hasn’t happened yet.
CHAPEL HILL -- Listed are this weekend’s state pairings and last weekend’s regional results from the North Carolina High School Boys and Girls State Basketball Tournaments:
LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg College Hurricanes were hoping to get a full weekend of action in last Saturday and Sunday, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
Louisburg was able to stage its home doubleheader last Saturday against Patrick Henry, and the Hurricanes were able to earn a sweep courtesy of 2-1 and 6-5 victories.

BUNN -- Wet weekend weather didn’t bode well for a potential prep golf match Monday between host Southern Nash, Wilson Fike and Louisburg.
But skies cleared that morning, and the event took place as scheduled -- much to the happiness of Southern Nash’s Haywood Brantley.
Louisburg College sophomore center Jordan Davidson (with ball) was effective inside for the Hurricanes during their victory over Guilford Tech in the championship game of the Region X Men’s Basketball Tournament, which concluded Sunday afternoon at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth.
