LOUISBURG -- It hasn’t been long ago -- the middle of the last decade, in fact -- that the Louisburg High School girls basketball team qualified for the Class 1-A Regionals in Greenville, and came within one victory of a repeat performance the next season.
Louisburg then hit on a few down campaigns, and it’s Brett Kiger’s job to aid the program during a potential resurgence.
Few are the high school athletes who are stars from ‘Day One’ -- performers who excelled the minute they stepped on the field of competition as freshman.
That was the case for former Franklinton High School girls soccer standout Amanda Knapp.

LOUISBURG -- Terrell Lane Middle School scored a first on the soccer field this fall for veteran head coach Dominick Petrosillo.
Until this year, the Tornadoes had never swept both the Middle Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

RALEIGH -- The 35th Annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Championships will be held today at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State University.
Here are the pairings for the championships:
BUNN -- Bunn’s Mini Mites wrapped up regular season action last Saturday with a 36-18 home victory over rival Louisburg in a East Wake Football League gridiron contest.
Bunn closed at 5-3 overall and 5-1 in league play, which was good for first place in the Northern Division.
Jason Jones of Pilot pulled in this amazing 11-pound bass during a recent fishing expedition. The whopping bass was 23.25 inches long, 8.5 inches wide and had a girth of four inches.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s final home regular season football game at its 52-year-old field was almost one for the memory books Friday night.
But the Red Rams, after nearly rallying from a huge first-half deficit, came up short during its last contest of the 2010 campaign against Northern Carolina Conference rival North Johnston.

LOUISBURG -- Bragging rights and playoff seeding -- and in Louisburg’s case, playoff existence -- were at stake when Bunn traveled to LHS to renew one of the area’s fiercest football rivalries.
Louisburg, playing with desperation and intensity, roared ahead early, but Bunn showed its savvy down the stretch to earn a 44-28 decision over the Warriors in a Northern Carolina Conference showdown at Patterson Field on the LHS campus.
Shana Kay Webber and Daniel Shane Gordon were united in marriage in a 4 p.m. ceremony on Sept. 18, 2010 at Longacre Bed & Breakfast in Appomattox, Va. The Rev. Steve Bradshaw performed the outdoor ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Sammy and Angie Webber of Pamplin, Va. and the granddaughter of Barbara Webber and the late Billy Webber, Kay Webber and John Letterman, all of Pamplin, Va.
Myra and Scott Allen of Youngsville announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristi Ann Allen of Wilson, to Samuel Brad Medford of Rocky Mount. The groom-elect is the son of Sam and Marie Medford of Tarboro. The wedding will take place Nov. 12, 2010 in Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y.
Randy and Dale Kearney of Epsom announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Leigh Kearney, to Matthew Holt Moore, son of Doug and Roxanne Moore of Louisburg. The wedding is planned for December 11, 2010 at 12 p.m. at Liberty Christian Church, Epsom.
Melvin Keith Wrenn and Betty Murray Wrenn of Louisburg are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Betty Elaine Wrenn, to Benjamin Ray Lucas of Castalia. He is the son of Alice Boulden Lucas and the late Bennie A. Lucas of Castalia. A November wedding is planned.
Justin and Amanda Varner are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Anna Klaire Varner, born Aug. 22, 2010. She weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long.
Justin is in the U.S. Navy stationed in Iraq. Amanda lives in Laurinburg.
DUCK HUNTING. Little Chase Sutton, 3, of High Point, went duck hunting at the Youngsville Halloween Festival Saturday evening and came up a winner. Enjoying the game as much as the players was Shanae Crudup of Raleigh, who was operating the booth — and who made sure there were lots of winners!
LOTS OF BEGGARS. The streets of Louisburg’s historic district were full of Trick or Treaters Sunday night as the little beggars made their annual rounds in creative — and sometimes scary — costumes. The nearly perfect weather drew nearly record numbers of ghosts, goblins and other creatures of the night.
LOUISBURG – Treva O. Todd, 80, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 1, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Wallace officiating.
SPRING HOPE - Pete Medlin, 70, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 3) at Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell. Burial will follow at Zebulon Town Cemetery.
RALEIGH - Nannie Lue Evans Bullock died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at Christian Faith Baptist Church. Interment followed at Haywood Baptist Church cemetery in Louisburg.
RALEIGH - William Henry Shelton, 66, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 30, at Greater Pentecostal Church, Raleigh, with Minister James Rogers officiating. Interment was in the Hillard family cemetery, Garner.
LOUISBURG - Clifton Perdue, 72, of Louisburg passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
CENTERVILLE - Florence Tharrington Radford, 91, of Centerville, died Sunday, October 31, 2010, at Wake Medical Center. She was a member of Centerville Baptist Church and loved to sew and cook for her family and friends, and when she was younger she loved to strip tobacco. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie G. Radford, and her grandson, Benjamin G. Radford, Jr.
LOUISBURG - Cindy LeAnne Walsh Johnson, 47, of Louisburg died Saturday, October 30, 2010, at her home. A private memorial service will be held.
