It is January 26, 2011, opening day for the new session of The North Carolina General Assembly. Republicans have won control of both houses for the first time since the dawn of the twentieth century. Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger has a comfortable 27-23 working margin of Republicans to Democrats that will help his party pass legislation, but House Speaker Thom Tillis faces a tougher challenge with only a 62-58 Republican plurality.

It is my hope that North Carolina citizens will not be one-issue voters during the mid-term elections. A few of the top issues are the budget, immigration, the New York mosque, abortion, and jobs.
ZEBULON - Anne Williams Riker, 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 at her home. Funeral service was Friday, Oct. 15, at Pilot Baptist Church, Zebulon, with Pastor Mick Bowen officiating. Burial was in the Williams family cemetery, Clyde Pearce Road, Zebulon.
YOUNGSVILLE —Perry E. “Pete” Grissom, 66, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, Oct. 15, at Neuse Baptist Church on Gresham Lake Road in Raleigh. Burial followed in the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church cemetery in Four Oaks.
MIDDLESEX - Eunice Radford Chinnis, 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at The Laurels of Forest Glenn. Graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 15, at Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Michael Courtney officiating.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Henrietta M. Booze, 90, who died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- Funeral services for James Davis, 74, formerly of Louisburg, who died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Haywood Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis family cemetery.

WAKE FOREST-Donna “Dee” Ray, 56, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at Wake Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Virginia Dees officiating.
ROLESVILLE - Barry T. Perry, 60, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010 at Hospice of Wake County in Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at Body of Christ Church in Raleigh. Burial will be at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest.

Franklinton police are looking for a suspect who may have compounded his headache.
According to a report by Officer R.L. Burger, a Wilco-Hess employee came across surveillance footage of a short, stocky white man with long black hair swiping BC Powder and Goody’s headache medicine on Oct. 6.
The theft at the U.S. 1 store was reported on Oct. 7.

FRANKLINTON -- Senior Night proved to be a celebration of the present -- and the future -- for the Franklinton High School volleyball program.
Thursday at the FHS Gymnasium, the Lady Rams saluted just two upperclassmen -- Morgan Tharrington and Kim Smiley.

BUNN -- Bunn’s Ladycats will be the No. 1 seed for this coming week’s Northern Carolina Conference Volleyball Tournament.
All eight of the NCC’s clubs will have first-round matches on Monday at the higher seed.
The back-to-back semifinals will be played Tuesday at the highest remaining seed. Barring a monumental upset of the Ladycats on Monday by Northwest Halifax, those events will be played at the Bunn Dome.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Serving as a boxing coach in the early portion of his adult life, Rocky Winstead switched to teaching a much less puglistic endeavor in 1971.
But against a foe no less challenging -- in the form of a golf course.
Brett Kiger didn’t have to look far for his next coaching challenge.
As in less than one mile, to be exact.
Kiger, who has spent the past four seasons working as an assistant under Mike Holloman at Louisburg College, will be the new girls basketball head coach at Louisburg High School.

HENDERSON -- The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team is scheduled to play 23 games, including 11 home games, in the college’s third season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
VGCC will open the regular season on the road, at Davidson County Community College in Lexington on Nov. 6.
LOUISBURG -- In conjunction with the Town of Louisburg, Louisburg High School girls basketball coach Brett Kiger will host a hoops camp on Oct. 30 at the LHS Gymnasium.
There will be a morning session for youngsters ages 10-15, and an afternoon session for ages 4-9.
Cost is $15 per child, which includes four hours of instruction and a T-shirt.
FRANKLINTON -- The Franklinton Lions Mini Mites had a busy weekend in East Wake Football League action, traveling to Oak Grove last Saturday and Bunn on Sunday.
The Mighty Mites were defeated 27-7 by Oak Grove and 20-8 by Bunn.
Local fishermen making up Sandy Creek Team No. 1 took the top honor at the North Carolina B.A.S.S Federation’s Eastern Regional competition, which was held last Friday and Saturday at Lake Gaston. NC B.A.S.S Federation Nation president and County Finance Director Chuck Murray missed out on taking the top individual prize by 21/100ths of a pound — the result of one fish that truly got away.
