It has been four years since I attended a Chilean Reunion. You may recall the fun my sister and I had back in 2006 at the Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center at Blackstone. We experienced an amazing rush of happiness upon seeing friends we had not seen for a long time.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Louisburg man on drug and gun charges.
According to a report by Dep. Joel Anderson, DeMario L. Wilson was a passenger in a car that Sgt. James Davis stopped during the early morning hours of Aug. 16 because of an insurance stop.
Anderson said that Wilson acted suspiciously from the beginning, prompting officers to ask him to step out of the vehicle.
The United Way of Franklin County has opened its grant cycle to receive applications from Franklin County teachers who have an innovative project idea that goes outside the scope or a normal classroom day.
Each grant is up to $1,500. The UWFC board of directors has increased the amount available this year to $30,000, much in part to community designated dollars for the program and support from Novozymes in education programs locally.
It’s official. No surprise, but official.
The International Whistlers Convention is no longer part of the Franklin County Arts Council.
If you’re a long-time local resident, this probably seems a lot like 1994 all over again but with a different ending.
At the risk of oversimplifying this somewhat complex issue, it just seems like it was the proper time for the two groups to go on their separate ways. And separate they did on a vote Thursday night by the Arts Council Board of Directors.
Okay, you’re probably asking by now, what’s the “back story” to the long report beginning on page 1 of this edition involving our hospital, doctors and community leaders?
It’s actually pretty simple but it does have a lot of parts.
Some of it involves communication.
GOOD MORNING: It appears that Gov. Beverly Perdue may have taken State Sen. Doug Berger and Rep. John May off the hook, so to speak, at least so far as the matter of overdue state tax refunds are concerned.
You may recall that Saturday I asked what our two local representatives in the State General Assembly planned to do about this “sad state of affairs in Raleigh.”

The Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start will begin working with local primary care professionals to identify children at-risk for developmental delays as part of the Assuring Better Child Health and Development (ABCD) program. ABCD is a national program that trains primary health care professionals to use standardized tools to identify children who are at-risk for developmental delays and refer them to services.

GODWIN - Iantha White Mitchell, 100, died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010. Funeral service was Friday, Aug. 20, at Baptist Chapel Church, with the Rev. Alan Roberts and the Rev. Paul Honeycutt officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery.
In July, Madison Tyson, from Greenfield School attended the 8th Annual Shelton Challenge at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Madison is the daughter of Mike and Bridget Tyson of Bailey. As former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hugh Shelton often reflects on how his experiences as a youth prepared him for the opportunity to serve his country.
Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2010 Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 5 at the college’s Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is nationally accredited, graduates are now eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants.
Thirteen Welding Technology students at Vance-Granville Community College recently earned their national certification according to the standards of the American Welding Society, bringing to 589 the total number of certified welders produced by VGCC since 1972.

FRANKLINTON -- Emily Regan didn’t know what to expect heading into her first match as the volleyball coach at Franklinton High School.
Now, she expects even more.
Regan’s club shined in her debut, rolling to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 victory against Southern Nash in Tuesday’s regular season opener at the FHS Gymnasium.

BUNN -- Bunn’s Answer Women took to the court three times this week, intent on finding solutions to the questions that Coach Henry Jones has for them.
Jones has been at Bunn for 16 seasons, but rarely has the successful program had to rebuild as much as this fall, when the Ladycats must find a way to replace seven standout graduates from a 24-3 squad.

BUNN -- After a season-opening victory Tuesday over Northern Nash, first-year Bunn head coach Ben Daniels hoped to keep things going in a positive direction Thursday afternoon against backyard rival Southern Nash.
Things certainly started well for Bunn, which took a one-goal cushion into intermission.
Fishermen bemoan the whopper that got away. Golfers reflect on just-missed puts that hang on the lip of the cup. Basketball players never forget free throws they clanged off the rim in clutch situations.
We all have our personal hang-ups -- things we can’t seem to accomplish. Some of these failures can be forgiven as simple bad luck.

LOUISBURG -- The annual Safe Space Inc. Golf Tournament was held Aug. 13 at Green Hill Country Club.
All proceeds from the tourney went to support the services of Safe Space Inc., a domestic violence services organization.
This year’s winning foursome was Ricky Raynor, Ryan Raynor, Brian Johnson and Dan Edwards.
ZEBULON -- Kyler Newby gave the Mobile BayBears six strong innings to pick up his third win of the season as the BayBears defeat the Carolina Mudcats 6-1 at Five County Stadium on Thursday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
